Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. For 250 years (15651815), the Manila Galleon transported Asian goods from the Philippines to the Americas under the rule of the Spanish Crown. Stopping in Acapulco, Mexico, the silk, fans, lacquered goods, clothes, and porcelain brought by the galleon rapidly circulated through the Americas, introducing a new visual culture that influenced objects, consumers, makers, and merchants alike. Conversely, products imported from the Americas, such as silver, indigo dye, cochineal red, chili peppers, and corn, had an enormous impact on Asia. Eleven scholars from the United States, Mexico, and Singapore present current research on how the vast exchange of materials, techniques, and ideas between continents impacted the trajectory of art and material culture across the Pacific. This richly illustrated book marks the twenty-third symposium volume from the Denver Art Museum's Mayer Center for Ancient and Latin American Art. Editors & Contributors Edited by Jorge Rivas Perez, Emily Rauh Pulitzer Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the Saint Louis Art Museum; Karina H. Corrigan, Deputy Chief Curator and H. A. Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The definitive catalogue for the groundbreaking exhibition that explored the transformative impact of Asian luxury goods on the Netherlands in the 17th century. Written by a team of 30 international scholars, this volume documents how the Dutch East India Company (VOC) brought an "astonishing range" of exotic treasures?from Chinese blue-and-white porcelain to Indian chintz and Japanese lacquer?into the homes of Amsterdam's elite. It argues that these imports did not just decorate Dutch life but fundamentally reshaped it, inspiring artists like Rembrandt and Willem Kalf to incorporate these new textures and colors into their masterpieces. Key Features: The "Sensory" Experience: Essays detail the smells (spices), textures (silks), and visual brilliance of the objects that flooded the Dutch market. Catalogue Entries: Features 150 works of art, including the famous "Kraak" porcelain and rare Sawankhalok wares, placed side-by-side with the Dutch still-life paintings that depicted them. Cross-Cultural Analysis: Explores how Dutch delftware potters and textile dyers tried to imitate Asian technologies, leading to new European art forms. Quarto (31 cm). 356 pages. 250 color illustrations.

Hardcover. 356 pp. Ills. 31 cm. - A fascinating survey of the rich artistic and cultural impact of Asia on the Netherlands in the 17th century This lavishly illustrated catalogue discusses the Asian luxury goods that were imported into the Netherlands during the 17th century and demonstrates the overwhelming impact these works of art had on Dutch life and art during the Golden Age. Written by a team of 30 international scholars, this volume presents seven essays and catalogue entries on 150 works of art, including Dutch and Asian paintings, textiles, ceramics, lacquer, furniture, silver, diamonds, and jewelry. From the Dutch settlements throughout Asia-including Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, China, and Japan-Dutch maritime traders brought an astonishing range of luxuries back to the Netherlands. Dutch consumers were enthralled with these foreign goods, which brought new colors, patterns, and textures to their interiors and wardrobes. As seen in the book's many illustrations, Dutch artists also found inspiration in these objects and incorporated them into portraits, genre scenes, and particularly still-life paintings. Dutch artists and craftspeople also adapted distinctly Asian technologies, such as porcelain and lacquer, to create new works of art inspired by Asia. This catalogue weaves together the complex stories of these diverse works of art and presents fascinating portraits of the dynamic cities of Amsterdam and Batavia (Jakarta)-the Dutch trade center in Asia during the 17th century.
