VOLUME V ONLY of a six volume set. i-viii, 1-461, [1], [2] pages. Hardcover: H 22.5cm x L 15cm. Contemporary full calf leather binding; rubbing and scuffs to boards; slender splitting to front and rear joints but hinges remain firm; spine decorated with four slightly raised bands and two gilt lettered black title labels; some abrasions and chip to top label and its lower band; fractional loss to scuffed spine head. All edges marbled; marbled endpapers. Front pastedown features rare surviving mid-19th century yellow paper bookplate for "Belles Lettres Society," a literary society at Lorman, Mississippi's Oakland College, a Presbyterian Church-affiliated four-year college which operated from 1830-1861 and which was the forerunner of Alcorn University; bookplate hand-numbered in antiquarian ink twice (one being a correction) and initialed "CJ" in pencil along with printed motto "Nocturna versate manu, versate diurna." (from Horace's "Art of Poetry" which translates to "Turn over [the pages] by night and by day"). Three-line antiquarian ink inscription "Presented to | Belles Lettres Society | By Dr. A.T. Bowie" on front flyleaf (quite likely Dr. Allen Thomas Bowie Sr., 1813-1872, who varyingly resided in Natchez and Post Gibson, Mississippi as well as St. Joseph, Louisiana with the latter town lying almost immediately west of the Oakland-Alcorn campus). Toning/foxing throughout. Publisher's two page literature title list at rear. Binding is firm. Provenance from a Columbia, Mississippi estate of a family with multi-generational roots in in Port Gibson, Claiborne County, Mississippi.
