He was a key member of the Italian Transavanguardia movement, along with fellow countrymen Francesco Clemente, Mimmo Paladino, Nicola De Maria, and Sandro Chia. The movement was at its peak during the 1980s and was part of a wider movement of Neo-Expressionists painters around the world.

Auch diese Hamburger Ausstellung ist, obwohl aus Zeichnungen -und Gemälden bestehend, die man diesem Genre gewöhnlich nicht zurechnet, als eine Installation zu verstehen. Kaum hatte er den Kuppelsaal betreten, den er bis dahin nur aus Plänen kannte, beherrschte ihn die Vorstellung, der Pantheon-Charakter müsse durch vier Bild- Pfeiler - aufgegriffen und um einer inszenatorischen Grundstruktur der Ausstellung willen modifiziert werden. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Zeichnungen aus sechzehn Jahren, Zeichnungen, die für Enzo Cucchi den Kern seines Werks bilden. Er hat sie einmal mit der memoria in Verbindung gebracht, der Erinnerung an frühe Wesen, Formen, Mythen. Diese in den Zeichnungen lebhaft werdende Erinnerung stößt unablässig an akute Abgründe der Existenz - wie bei jenen Künstlern, welche dem in Rom lebenden Cucchi aus dem Norden, von fern her, mal insgeheim und mal offen zusprechen: Edvard Munch, Victor Hugo, Odilon Redon, Alfred Kubin. Sie sind es auch, die mit ihm den Alptraum und die Vision gemeinsam haben. Die durchgehend schwarzweiße Wiedergabe der Zeichnungen Cucchis in zahlreichen Publikationen scheint mittlerweile einen düster-grauen Schleier übers Werk gelegt zu haben. Mit unserer Ausstellung und mit den farbigen Wiedergaben der Werke in diesem Katalog wollen wir einen neuen Blick aufdie Sprache des Zeichen- und des Zeichnungsmaterials bei Cucchi lenken. Ed è così che questa nostra scultura storna, ritorna senza amici all'artista dopo esser inutilmente andata. Fantasma concreto e cavalla delusa che deve ringoiarsi velocità e bellezza per sprofondare nel mare a cercar tra i pesci. Ogni giorno si chiude e si apre un'era ed a volte qualcuna di esse ritorna così come anche le prime spade erano sculture di bronzo. Questa nostra scultura è pronta e va a lasciarsi affondare tra i pesci del mediterraneo dove i corteggiamenti spesso mutano in una danza crudele. Sandro Chia --- La scultura andata. andata nella vita. Qui si può pensare sopratutto ad una figura primordiale che sta sdraiata sotto la polvere degli scarponi degli dei. In questo caso siamo circondati da due pericoli, uno più tremendo dell'altro. Ci si trova tra la pittura e la scultura, un unico passaggio tremendo sta tra queste due scimmie. Un grande poeta ora deve esprimere la nostalgia che prova chi si sente gettato in questo tremendo passo. C'è un buon sapore. Mi pare di essere stato diverse volte sui pendii, ai margini di questa scultura. La scultura non è soltanto un antico deposito di popoli, di razze, di gusti, ma conserva come in un tabernacolo l'acqua, la pioggia, il fuoco, i paesaggi di tante zone d'Europa; le montagne e i fiumi destano ricordi, la terra affiora, la scultura trova qui la sua origine. Mi viene in mente un pensiero d'insieme: ho l'impressione di vedere un caravanterraglio spuntato sulle sponde di un melmoso fiume di fango, di un colore opaco ed acido pervaso della sonnolenza di una certa vita. in certi punti brillare lampanti raggi di luce: gli scultori leccano una zona che avevano scavato nella mattina.
