This study of Western Samoa, sub-titled "Land, Life and Agriculture in Tropical Polynesia," was published shortly after this new country became independant and self-governing, having been administered by NZ as trustee appointed by the UN. Earlier the territory was a…nnexed by Germany in 1899 and occupied by NZ forces in 1914. After WWI it became a mandate under the League of Nations, administerd by NZ until independence in 1961. NZ continued a close relationship in advisory, economic and foreign relations matters. The survey was undertake by the Geography Department of Auckland University and examined, in the main, land use, past present and for the future, touching on many related topics and forcasting possible developments. A well compiled and presented picture of "Tropical Polynesia" as it was 50 years ago and now providing an excellent resource for assessing Western Samoa's progress in that time. First edition of 1962, 337 pages including glossary of Samoan terms and index, 50 b/w photos, 66 maps or diagrams, including three fold-out maps at back .Dark blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+. neat ink name top FFEP, text block otherwise NF.
