Hardback. Condizione: Good. In a world where the humble file is often overlooked, DR Judd emerges from the shadows of 1975, wielding a literary scalpel to dissect our relationship with this unsung hero of the office supply world. "Use Of Files" is not just a manual; it?s a whimsical, yet oddly comprehensive exploration into a realm where organisation reigns supreme and chaos is but a misplaced paper clip away. Why bother with a self-help book when you can learn the secrets of efficiency and the fine art of filing? It?s like a motivational seminar, but with fewer glazed eyes and more cardboard box metaphors. Picture it: a time when disco balls twinkled, bell-bottoms were all the rage, and people were desperately trying to find a way to keep their paperwork in some semblance of order. DR Judd, in all his 1970s glory, tackles the pressing issues of the day?like how to deal with the avalanche of receipts, unsolicited leaflets, and those mysterious documents that seem to multiply in the dark corners of one?s desk. One can only imagine the fervent discussions that must have taken place at Macdonald and Janes over the cover design alone. A minimalist abstract of files? A nod to the complexity hidden behind a simple folder? Who knows! Inside this intriguing tome, readers will discover the inner workings of the filing system, laid out with the kind of enthusiasm typically reserved for a Sunday roast. It?s an assortment of techniques that could rival those of a Tetris champion, all while tantalisingly hinting at the philosophical implications of paper management. Will the reader emerge from these pages with a renewed passion for their filing cabinet? Or will they merely appreciate the irony of devoting an entire book to such a mundane subject? The answer lies within?if you can find it amidst the sheets of paper stacked precariously on your desk. Detailed explanations of the various types of files?hanging, manila, and even the elusive accordion file. Illustrations that make you question whether your filing system is as sophisticated as you thought. Tips on how to maintain your files, including how to avoid the dreaded paper jam (a threat as real as any soap opera plot twist). In-depth reflections on the emotional toll of losing a crucial document, as if each paper holds your very soul. Stories of the brave souls who dared to venture into the uncharted territories of the office filing cabinet. Condition: This book comes in a state that can be described as ?good??which in Crappy Old Books terms means the spine is intact, and the pages might still be whispering tales of their past lives, perhaps at a coffee-stained soiree. The cover displays some signs of wear, giving it the kind of character usually reserved for vintage leather jackets or your grandfather?s old armchair. It?s practically begging to be rescued from obscurity and given a second chance, ideally in the company of other misunderstood books. As you thumb through the pages, you may find yourself contemplating the deeper meaning behind the management of your own files. Are they simply tools for organisation, or do they represent your hopes, dreams, and the occasional crumpled love letter from university? In a particularly ironic twist, "Use Of Files" might just inspire you to take that mountain of paperwork and turn it into an art installation worthy of a trendy gallery?now that would be a filing system to behold! So why not rescue this quirky little book from the shelves of Crappy Old Books? After all, it might just be the missing piece in your quest for both order and enlightenment in a world that often feels like it?s drowning in a sea of paperwork. And who knows? You might even find that filing is the new yoga?an unexpected path to inner peace.…

Hardback. Condizione: Good. Use of Files (1973) by D. R. Judd is one of those gloriously straight-faced titles that could only come from the era when computing was a serious business conducted in serious rooms by serious people who didn?t want excitement, they wanted order . Not ?content.? Not ?data.? Not ?the cloud.? Just? files . Plain, sensible, obedient files, lined up and doing what they?re told. And yet, behind this modest title lurks the beating heart of modern life. Because whether you?re running a bank, an airline, a national insurance scheme, or simply trying to stop your own paperwork from multiplying like rabbits, everything eventually becomes a question of: where do we put the information, how do we find it again, and how do we stop it becoming a disaster? In 1973, ?files? meant more than a folder on your desktop. It meant systems. Structures. Records. Access patterns. The thrilling administrative romance of making information behave . This is the kind of book that sits quietly at the foundation of civilisation, like plumbing: unglamorous, essential, and only truly appreciated when it fails catastrophically. Judd writes with that wonderfully calm, slightly stern technical tone of the early 1970s ? a period when documentation assumed the reader was competent, attentive, and not emotionally fragile. There?s no ?quick start.? No ?in five easy steps.? No motivational pep talk. Just a steady, methodical explanation of how to organise and handle information properly, in an age when storage was expensive, memory was small, and every choice had consequences. The book has the faint aura of the mainframe: humming, reliable, quietly judging you. And the irony, of course, is delicious. Fifty years later we are drowning in files. Files everywhere. Files inside files. Files you didn?t create and can?t delete. Files auto-synced, duplicated, cached, versioned, and politely resurrected by a service you cancelled in 2019. We live in a world where the use of files is no longer a technical question but a moral one. Which is why this book is such a satisfying artefact: it captures the moment when people still believed that with enough careful thought, the file problem could be solved. Condition (Good, like a well-kept cabinet) This copy is in Good condition ? fittingly tidy for a book about keeping things tidy. It presents well, holds together properly, and has clearly not spent its life face-down under a coffee mug. It looks like it has been respected, perhaps even consulted, and then sensibly returned to its place ? the highest praise any book on files can receive. Why you want it Because it?s a crisp, practical slice of early information-systems thinking ? and a time capsule from the age when the digital world was being built with caution and discipline, rather than apps that ask for your contacts ?for a better experience.? Perfect for: collectors of vintage computing and information science anyone who loves obscure but foundational technical books people who enjoy the quiet grandeur of systems and structure the sort of reader who finds comfort in indexes, headings, and orderly thinking Crappy Old Books offers Use of Files exactly as intended: solid, sensible, and quietly important. A 1973 manual for the management of information ? from back when we still believed information could be managed.…
