The Abolitionists were prolific publicists and interesting characters, whose view of their own campaign was accepted at face value by generations of admiring historians. In this carefully researched book, D. H. Porter asks two irreverent questions: If the Abolitionists were so convincing, why did their campaign take twenty years to achieve its goal? And if the struggle was so difficult, how was it finally won? Both questions lead to the hypothesis which Porter explores in depth: that British abolitionists were blocked by equally convincing but more skillful opponents whose economic decline made abolition of the slave trade not only desirable, but necessary. Dr. Porter's arguments cast doubt on the effectiveness of moral persuasion on political and economic issues, and should stimulate reconsideration of the many reform movements which were modeled on British abolition.
