In April 1910 D'Angelo emigrated with his father to the United States. He spent the next eight years working in rail yards and in road-building crews in the northeast and beyond. In 1919 he settled in New York City and began writing poetry while living in conditions of stark poverty. Between 1922 and 1925, D'Angelo published about two dozen poems in magazines and newspapers.
