Neuware - Das Buch gibt mit Kapiteln zum Unterhaltungstheater, zum Tanz, zur Populärmusik, zum Vergnügungspark und zum Drogenkonsum einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der Berliner Vergnügungskultur vom Deutschen Kaiserreich bis zur Weimarer Republik. Es verfolgt dabei den Zusammenhang von 'Vergnügen' und 'Stadt' auf zwei Ebenen: Zum einen zeigt es, dass die Vergnügungskultur eine wichtige Funktion für die sog. 'innere Urbanisierung' hatte, d.h. für die mentale und habituelle Anpassung der Stadtbewohner/innen an die durch die 'äußere' Urbanisierung veränderten Lebensbedingungen in der Großstadt. Zum anderen zeigt es, dass die Vergnügungskultur auch ein wichtiges Übungsfeld für den Umgang mit kultureller Differenz war und damit den kosmopolitischen Charakter Berlins als Weltstadt prägte. Diese beiden Leitfragen nach der Erfahrung der Weltstadt im Vergnügen strukturieren die Darstellung in den fünf Kapiteln, die gleichzeitig eine anschauliche Rekonstruktion der verschiedenen Berliner Vergnügungsorte und -praktiken, der Akteure auf und vor den Unterhaltungsbühnen und -plätzen der Stadt bieten. Ein Ergebnis der Darstellung ist dabei auch die Erkenntnis, dass das Berliner Vergnügungsleben nicht erst in den 'goldenen' Zwanzigerjahren, sondern schon um 1900 in vielerlei Hinsicht ausschweifend war und die Wahrnehmung Berlins als Weltstadt prägte.…
