Throughout the voyage he pursued many lines of inquiry but, as this selection shows, it is possible to follow the growth and progress of the thought which was to lead to the theory of natural selection, against the framework of an absorbing adventure story. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Richard Dawkins' "The Greatest Show On Earth: The Evidence For Evolution". An accessible and engaging account on a subject that he victoriously celebrates - rather than argues - as indisputable, irrefutable fact. He makes a compelling case for Charles Darwin as THE most consequential and influential - therefore the greatest - thinker of our time, since at least the late-19th century up to the present. Greater, that is, than the greatest: Einstein, Freud, and Marx, among a few others. Yet Dawkins realized that a disturbingly large percentage of the American and British public - the majority, in fact - did not share his knowledge, much less conviction, about evolution.
