This in the American 1st edition from 1891. Very good in glue cloth with gilt titles and silver designs on the spine and front cover. Corners and spine ends scuffed and bit worn. Binding is still quite sound. Text has age toning, but no other marks or damage. A nice copy for its age. Provenance: The book is from the personal library of the famous children's author, Maurice Sendak. After Sendak died in 2012, a portion of his huge personal library (reportedly more than 10,000 items) was donated to the Rosenbach Museum & Library in Philadelphia. The Rosenbach then identified some items to be sold, rather than kept in the Library's collection, and so those items were consigned to auction. A certificate attesting to this fact is included with the book and is signed by the auctioneer. Sendak did not sign or affix his bookplate in most of his books. Maurice Sendak (1928 2012) was an American author and illustrator of children's books. He became most widely known for his book Where the Wild Things Are, first published in 1963. He also wrote works such as In the Night Kitchen, Outside Over There, and illustrated many works by other authors including the Little Bear books by Else Holmelund Minarik.
