First 3 pages (including title page, pp. 23-30 (does not affect text) and last 4 pages of book (advertising pages) have top corner torn off. Damp stain and foxing spots on pages. Covers show heavy edge wear with heavy rubbing/scuffing and bumped corners. Spine edge wear. Hinges cracked but binding still intact. Octavo, red cloth (harcover), gilt letters, illustrations, 256 pp. Fair, with damp staining to upper cover (still, bright & attractive), upper hinge cracked (binding still tight); in a Good, mylar protected dust jacket with light edgewear that includes chipping and light dampstaining. Photographs gladly provided upon request. From first chapter: A bleak, gloomy April evening in the memorable spring of 1805; the vast pine-clad ridges of the Northern Tirol looming sullenly through the deepening dimness that betokened a coming storm; a wide waste of untrodden snow, forming the highest part of the great mountain-wall far below which lay on one side the noble panorama of the Inn valley, and on the other side the still, blue-green waters of the Achensee lake; and two men trmping briskly over it, knapsack on back and pike-staff in hand. Though plainly clad in rough frieze jackets and leather gaiters, they were evidently neither guides nor hunters; and one would hardly have expected to meet any other man in such a spot, with the day declining and a storm at hand. But the pair marched gaily on, one whistling meerily and the other humming a song, as if either ignorant of their danger or confident in their power to brave it. Literature. bslic.
