Hardback. Condizione: Good. Alone and tormented by her own mind, a young woman must confront her darkest fears, or be swallowed by them--forever. In the glittering city of Las Vegas, where fortunes are won and lost on a single roll of the dice, there exists a world unseen by the pleasure-seekers above. There, a community of outcasts can be found. They dwell in the shadows, beneath the thin veneer of glamor, far from the twinkling lights and towering casinos. Plagued by schizophrenia and alienated from her loved ones, Suzie Franks abandons her college life in Oregon, ending up in this dark world beneath Sin City. Here, amidst the threats underground, her struggle for survival becomes its own high-stakes game, with escape the ultimate prize. But the odds always seem to be stacked against her, or perhaps that's just her troubled mind playing tricks. Faced with adversaries both real and imagined, can Suzie find a way out of the tunnels and overcome her demons? Or will she succumb to the crushing darkness of her new world among The Mole People. O'Connor, John (illustratore).…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Journal to Gratitude invites you to join in the transformative spiritual journeys of those who have gone before you. The scriptural readings, journal notes and spiritually-reflective poems are organized around the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius. Be it 500 years ago when Ignatius, the layperson, wrote the Spiritual Exercises or today when you, the lay or religious person, experience the same prayer methodologies, a journey to gratitude awaits you. While there are numerous wonderful forms of prayer available to people, the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius are recognized as amongst the best for transforming our relationship with God and one another. The prayers and poetic reflections include popular authors like Thomas Merton, Telihard de Chardin S.J., M.L. West, Saint Augustine, Mary Oliver, and others. More importantly, the prayers and poetic reflections include every day authors who simply use journaling as a form of prayer. Larry Gillick S.J. introduces each of the Spiritual Exercise weeks. Without regard to advanced theology or literary degrees, people have been journaling their spiritual reflections with God for almost 3,500 years. Excellent prose was not their greatest strength. Being inspired by the Holy Spirit was their gift. The journaling done by the earliest biblical authors was an outgrowth of their effort to communicate with the God in their lives. Of the most commonly recognized 66 books in the Christian bible, the poetic Psalms are the largest. One of the beauties of writing down our humble efforts to communicate with God is that we can, and do, go back to them. Appreciate the Exercises. The Exercises are not a program or workshop, but a way of receiving life and living more freely what has been given to us. One does not actually make the Spiritual Exercises; rather the Exercises make the person a fuller receiver of her or his creation. Ignatian Spirituality flows from these Exercises into the personal lives and missions of those who do come face-to-face with Jesus and themselves. They will most probably set your heart on fire and help fill many other hearts with a feeling of gratitude. Accept this invitation The Exercises do transform. You do not have to be a saint before you start them. Ignatius of Loyola is a great model for a spiritual journey because he was not saintly when he started the Exercises. When you finish the exercises, you will not be concerned about being good enough. It is not about being perfect or imperfect. It is not about being saint or sinner. It is about accepting that we are all a little rascally, and all of us are made in the image and likeness of God. Journal To Gratitude can be used as an aide for daily prayer, for the novice or seasoned journalist, and for individual or group study of the Spiritual Exercises. Like the Spiritual Exercises themselves, it can be used by Catholics and non-Catholics alike, laypeople and the religious. Journal to Gratitude supports two non-profits. The book includes spiritual journaling by many authors over thousands of years. For the vast majority of these authors, their material reward rarely exceeded a meal or a place to sleep. The proceeds of this book are being donated to two Jesuit affiliated organizations that promote spiritual outreach and journaling. After expenses, all proceeds will be divided amongst: 1) Ignatian Associates, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and 2) Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, Minneapolis, Minnesota.…

Hardback. Condizione: Good. The Dallas police chief who inspired a nation with his response to the killing of five of his officers shares his personal story and his faith in America's potential to unite communities through a dedication to transparency and trust. The real deal: a real Christian, a real man, a real leader.--Whoopi Goldberg, The View A front-row seat to the tension between law enforcement and minority residents nationwide.--The Dallas Morning News On July 7, 2016, protesters marched in the streets of Dallas to demonstrate against the killings of unarmed black men by the police. As the peaceful event drew to a close, a sniper opened fire, targeting white cops and killing five of them. Into this charged situation stepped Dallas police chief David O. Brown, who, with a historic new tactical approach, quickly ended the gunman's siege and calmed his community and the nation. In this powerful memoir, Chief Brown takes us behind the scenes of that tragedy and shares intimate moments from his early life: his childhood, in which he was raised by a single mom in a neighborhood poor in resources but rich in love and faith; his college years--cut short when he felt called to save his hometown from its descent into drug-related violence; and, as he moved up the ranks, a series of deeply personal tragedies. His first partner on the job was killed in the line of duty; his younger brother was murdered by drug dealers; and during Brown's first month as chief of police, his mentally ill son was killed by a cop after taking two other lives. Called to Rise charts how, over his thirty-three-year career, Brown evolved from a throw 'em in jail and let God sort 'em out beat cop into a passionate advocate for community-oriented law enforcement, rising from crime scene investigator to S.W.A.T. team leader to the head of a municipal police department widely regarded as one of America's finest. Now retired, America's chief wants to bring his hard-earned knowledge of Dallas--emphasizing outreach, accountability, and inclusion--to help encourage unity in the nation's hurting communities. Chief Brown believes that we have to band together to engage in the kind of dialogue that can lead to solutions. In place of complaining, we all have to take action--and one first great step is to tune in to what is being said. Called to Rise explores the keys to that dialogue--trust, transparency, and compassion--that have made Brown a leader on the front lines of social change in America.…

It was from the Jews that Jesus called his disciples, and out of Judaism the early church was born. Through understanding these rites and customs, God's plan for drawing us into relationship with Him is revealed. Neat Jewish Stuff for Christians brings the reader to a better understanding of the Jewish roots of the Christian faith and the message of Jesus. Questions for discussion are included after each chapter. As Dr. Teitelbaum sums up: Christians grow in worshipful appreciation of Jesus when His roots in Judaism are understood.
