Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. Iooss, Jr., Walter (photography); Sims, David (book design) (illustratore). 1st Edition. As new condition oversized (folio - over 12 inches tall) black cloth boards with copper front cover lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with color photogaphs. "On September 6, 1995, the major league pageant was glorified by Cal Ripken. Playing in his 2,131st consecutive game, he surpassed Lou Gehrig's most hallowed of all baseball records, the one no one believed ever would be broken. At age 35, the longtime star shortstop of the Baltimore Orioles accepted a nation's admiration and love with the grace and humility that has characterized his long career. "Ripken's streak" commenced in his first full season of major league action; and the sports world watched with growing wonder at Cal played every game, year after year, redeeming an American ideal - that of the reliable working man who shows up on time, scorning sick days and frequently ignoring injuries that would have disabled his colleagues. This feat of extraordinary durability marks the pinnacle of a still-evolving, truly remarkable career. Calvin Edwin Ripken Jr. was voted American League Rookie of the Year in 1982, and in the following year was named the league's Most Valuable Player - an award he received again in 1991. Named to his league's All-Star team twelve times, he has been a consistent offensive force, ammassing more career home runs than any other shortstop, and he has fielded his position with captivating skill. In one season (1990) he played every inning and committed only three errors, attaining the highest fielding percentage (.996) of any shorstop in any year. He was born to play baseball. His father, Cal Ripken Sr., a respected coach and manager at both the minor and major league levels, tutored his sons in the art of the game; and for six years Cal Jr. and younger brother Billy - a gifted second baseman - were the Orioles' agile partners on the double play. The statistical achievements of Cal Ripken are one legend still in the making. How this Maryland lad grew into a star performer and spiritual inspiration for his teammates and opponents also is the stuff of legend. Here is the Cal Ripken story in pictures and in his own words, modest but forthright like the man himself." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Sims, David (book design); AP/World Wide Photos (photography) (illustratore). 1st Edition. As new condition black linen boards, black faux leather spine and gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition black linen slipcase with gold cover lettering. Includes Author Dedication; Foreword; Acknowledgments; Introduction and Appendix. Profusely illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Signed and inscribed by the author, the late great legendary golfer Byron Nelson, with black Sharpie, on the half title page. "The personal diary of golf legend Byron Nelson, 1935-1947, including the year of his record eleven straight tournament victories. With tips, stories, and reflections from Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Kathy Whitworth, Henry Picard, Tom Watson, Ken Venturi, Mickey Wright, Don January, Jug McSpaden and other golf greats." - from the title page. "I am happy to commend to you Byron Nelson and his book. For sixty years, I've liked and admired him for a number of reasons. Back in the thirties, a lot of us who tried to teach people to play golf became fascinated with Byron's golf swing. Steel shafts had just replace hickory, and Byron seemed to have found the way to get the most out of the new clubs. I'd study him in play or practice; his swing seemed perfect, his balance was perfect, even his divots (which looke like little dollar bills) were perfect in a certain way. And like everybody else, I was amazed at what Byron did in his great year of 1945. Eleven straight wins and eighteen tournament victories for the year. It's still hard for me to believe that anyone could play so well for such a long period of time. It's a wonderful thing when success finds a man as nice as Byron Nelson. But as much as I was impressed by his swing and his great record as a tournament player, I've treasured our friendship much more. I think the big thing we have in common is that we love people more than golf." - Harvey Penick, Austin, Texas, from the Foreword. Signed by Author(s).
