"Great American Mystery Stories of the Twentieth Century presents an impressive array of writers. These literary sleuths - American writers who hail from all over the United States and even abroad - offer stories that reflect the varied experiences of a vast and culturally diverse country. The authors in this collection have garnered innumerable honors, from myriad awards conferred by their own mystery-writing colleagues to the Nobel Prize in Literature; they all share the writer's greatest reward, however, the broad readership and popular acclaim that can only come from creating superb, entertaining tales. Some of these mystery masters have left an indelible mark on the reading public by creating characters that have entered the national consciousness. The Saint, Lew Archer, Travis McGee, Uncle Abner - these names are real to mystery aficionados who know them well and have learned much about life from them. Other writers have given birth to characters who live only in one brief tale, making readers regret that they won't meet them again. Although the modern American mystery story has only recently gained respectability as the subject of academic study, the genre is an integral part of this country's literature. In fact, it stands at the very center of a markedly American literary offering, the short story. Edgar Allan Poe, the creator of the short story form, based the world's first mystery tale on the crime story, a style of fiction that originally appeared in the beginning of the nineteenth century. He enhanced the elements in these negligible stories with such genius that he lifted his own tales to the level of art. Poe's "The Murder in the Rue Morgue," first published in 1841, has been called by one critic "the single most important story in the history of the genre." Subsequent literary detectives may have occasionally felt daunted by following the mystery story's inimitable forefather; still, they have made their own distinctive contributions to this uniquely American literary form. Among them, the twenty-three writers in this anthology of American mystery masterpieces have written hundreds of memorable stories. Choosing the writers - not to mention the stories - from a national treasure of literary excellence was indeed difficult. The sheer number of outstanding American mystery stories offers endless hours of reading pleasure. To this day, superlative writers apply their varied skills to the genre first explored by Edgar Allan Poe. Readers new to this literary terrain will enjoy finding their way to some of mystery's hidden corners - as well as its landmarks. - The Editors" - from the Preliminary Page.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The four chapters of this volume, written by prominent workers in the field of adaptive processing and linear prediction, address a variety of problems, ranging from adaptive source coding to autoregressive spectral estimation. The first chapter, by T.C. Butash and L.D. Davisson, formulates the performance of an adaptive linear predictor in a series of theorems, with and without the Gaussian assumption, under the hypothesis that its coefficients are derived from either the (single) observation sequence to be predicted (dependent case) or a second, statistically independent realisation (independent case). The contribution by H.V. Poor reviews three recently developed general methodologies for designing signal predictors under nonclassical operating conditions, namely the robust predictor, the high-speed Levinson modeling, and the approximate conditional mean nonlinear predictor. W. Wax presents the key concepts and techniques for detecting, localizing and beamforming multiple narrowband sources by passive sensor arrays. Special coding algorithms and techniques based on the use of linear prediction now permit high-quality voice reproduction at remorably low bit rates. The paper by A. Gersho reviews some of the main ideas underlying the algorithms of major interest today.

1st Edition. FIRST EDITIONS OF FOUR VERY IMPORTANT PHYSICS PAPERS, TWO OF WHICH CONFIRMED DE BROGLIE'S HYPOTHESIS ON THE WAVE NATURE OF MATTER. Davisson and Thomson shared the 1937 Nobel Prize in Physics "for the experimental discovery of the diffraction of electrons by crystals" (Nobel Prize Portal). (1) DAVISSON & GERMER'S 1927 confirmation of de Broglie's hypothesis --the first observation of the wave nature of electrons. de Broglie's wave-particle duality hypothesis and this 1927 confirmation were major steps forward in the experimental confirmation of quantum mechanics. Though Davisson's discovery was somewhat "accidental", it is considered the "definitive confirmation of de Broglie's hypothesis" (L'Annunziata, Radioactivity, 428; Brush, Making 20th Century Science, 224). (2) THOMSON & REID's purposefully set out to prove de Broglie's hypothesis, the wave nature of the electron. Together they designed an instrument to observe diffraction effects, specifically using transmission geometry with high-energy electrons (Davisson and Germer had used reflection diffraction geometry with low-energy electrons. (3) ELLIS & WOOSTER here demonstrate that beta decay does not conserve energy (they did not know of the existence of the neutrino at the time). "By measuring the average energy of disintegration of electrons in the beta decay of radium E", Ellis and Wooster "firmly established that the energy spectrum of electrons emitted in beta decay was continuous" (Hon, Going Amiss in Experimental Research, 227). (4) MAX BORN'S first description in English of his revolutionary new probabilistic interpretation of quantum mechanics. In 1926, Born published, in German, a series of papers entitled "Zur Quantenmechanik der Stoßvorgänge". The papers presented, explained, and developed Born's probability interpretation (also known as the statistical interpretation) for the first time. In this paper, Born explains that work in English for the first time with the additional goal of making "an attempt to understand the physical significance of the quantum theoretical formulae" as a whole (Born, Nature 119, 1927). ALSO INCLUDED: a hundred page "Supplement to Nature: The Bicentenary of Newton's Death" bound in. NOTE THAT WE SEPARATELY OFFER THE 1927 THOMSON & REID PAPER AND THE 1928 THOMSON PAPER ON THE SAME SUBJECT IN ORIGINAL WRAPS. WE ALSO OFFER DE BROGLIE'S SEMINAL PAPER IN BOTH ORIGINAL WRAPS AND BOUND. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Macmillan. Complete volume. 4to. 10.5 x 8 inches (262 x 200mm). [lix], 948, [100], 4. Ex-libris bearing only minimal markings on the title page and none on the spine. Full, complete volume. Handsomely and professionally rebound in half leather. 5 raised bands at the spine, gilt-ruled. One red morocco label; one black morocco label; both gilt-lettered. Tightly and very solidly bound. Clean and bright throughout. Near fine condition.
