Instead, modern political culture in the Dutch Low Countries began with a revolution and is rife with rivalries among political and ideological factions. De Rooy argues that because of its extremely open economy, the country is vulnerable to external political, cultural, and economic pressures, and Dutch politics is a balancing act between profiting from international developments and maintaining sovereignty. The sudden rise of populism and Euroscepticism at the turn of the millennium, then, indicated a loss of this balance. Shining new light on the political culture of the Netherlands, this book provides insights into the polder model and the principles of pillarization in Dutch society. Tegen het einde van de 19e eeuw was het darwinisme niet alleen een biologische theorie, maar werd het - zeker in Duitsland - vooral gezien als een wereldbeschouwing. De profeet van deze leer was Ernst Haeckel, de vooraanstaande hoogleraar in de dierkunde aan de universiteit van Jena, die het evangelie verkondigde van de evolutietheorie en met Bismarck ten strijde trok tegen het reactionaire conservatisme, het socialisme en bovenal de Rooms-katholieke kerk. De confessionelen keerden zich nog steeds tegen de evolutietheorie, die zij spottend aanduidden als 'de apentheorie'. Welnu, was het niet tijd het gelijk of ongelijk van dit standpunt op zuiver wetenschappelijke wijze, dat wil zeggen door een experiment, vast te stellen? Deze proefneming zou het best als volgt kunnen worden verricht: de wijfjes van een aantal gorilla's en chimpansees dienden door middel van kunstmatige inseminatie te worden bevrucht met het sperma van negers. Als het werkelijk tot een zwangerschap zou leiden - en dat was hoogst waarschijnlijk, gezien de grote lichamelijke gelijkenis tussen mensen en apen - dan was er een 'missing link' gecreëerd. Daarmee zou dan, naar het oordeel van Moens, definitief het ongelijk van de confessionelen zijn bewezen. Moens wendde zich daarom in 1908 tot het publiek met een brochure waarin hij zijn experiment uiteenzette en opriep hem financieel te steunen. Deze publikatie, Waarheid. Proefondervindelijke onderzoekingen omtrent de afstamming van den mensch , verscheen tevens in een Engelse, Franse en Duitse versie. Dit leverde nog wel 500 gulden op, maar verder vooral veel verontwaardiging. Zijn opvattingen kwamen mede voort uit Moens' verontwaardiging over de discriminatie van de gekleurde bevolking in de Verenigde Staten. In Washington D.C. verrichtte hij een soort antropologisch onderzoek, deels onder schoolkinderen, deels ook met behulp van wat oudere gekleurde meisjes. Als hij 'interessante exemplaren' had gevonden, liet hij deze fotograferen, voor een deel ook in de vorm van naaktfoto's, een niet ongebruikelijke methode in de antropologie. Herman Moens keerde eind 1926 terug naar Europa, verontwaardigd over het leed dat hem in de Verenigde Staten was berokkend. Hij vestigde zich in Frankrijk, waar hij waarschuwde voor een raciale oorlog op wereldschaal, veroorzaakt door het stuitende superioriteitsgevoel der blanken, en pleitte voor internationale en interraciale samenwerking. Met dit laatste zou een begin moeten worden gemaakt door het in 1928 mede door Moens opgerichte Genootschap 'Universeele Broederschap'. Condition : very good copy. ISBN 9789026964497.
