Hitchcock, New York 1926 Blue cloth stamped in gilt, pp. [2], x, 309, [1]; VG+ book, foxing to edges, in a VG+ jacket with light soil and foxing, a few minor chips and tears to edges Margaret Sanger wasn't the only leader of the birth control movement. Dennett was an incredibly important figure in the movement and is now largely forgotten. In 1915 Dennett and a group of others formed the National Birth Control League. Dennett believed that deleting the prohibition on birth control in the Comstock Act would be the best and easiest way to improve the accessibility of birth control by allowing access through the mail, while Sanger thought that was unrealistic and instead sought to provide access via a doctor's prescription (a strategy that ultimately would meet more immediate success. In 1936 it became possible for doctors to prescribe contraception). Dennett lobbied congress aggressively between 1919 and 1924 to pass legislation to amend the Comstock Act. Her bill was introduced several times but failed to pass. The present book was intended to be a neutral, unoffending exposition of birth control laws and campaigns in a variety of countries and states in an effort to persuade the public to support her political aims. In 1929, the 57 year old Dennett was charged and found guilty of distributing obscene material (her sex education pamphlet, The Sex Side of Life) through the US Postal Service under the Comstock Laws. She was cleared of all charges on appeal and the case would help contribute to the dissolution of the Comstock Act. Access to birth control for married couples wasn't made fully legal in the US until 1965, and only became fully legal for unmarried individuals in 1972.
