"Laurens had encouraged Detwiler to make a serious comparative study of the eyes of various forms and he, with Detwiler, published two papers on the retina of Phrynosoma and the alligator. Previous to this Detwiler had published his first papers on the effect of light on the retina of the tortoise and the lizard. Laurens' encouragement and the firm grounding which was laid on the morphological side impelled Detwiler to continue both fields of study along with his nervous system work. He was amazed at the constancy with which photomechanical changes occurred and how they could be controlled if the variables were known. From the standpoint of the artist-engineer the pure aesthetic beauty of eye structure and function intrigued him and his physiological experimentation under controlled conditions was of first rank. Technically his eye collection is the finest and most complete, in a comparative sense, of any in the world [this was in 1961]. He cut, mounted and stained each slide himself, for he would entrust this work to no one else. His artistry in these studies reached its peak in the morphological description of the eye of the Chinchilla. His original paintings of this eye are real artistic masterpieces (J. S. Nicholas, "Samuel Randall Detwiler 18901957. A Biographical Memoir", pp. 98-99).

This book offers a comprehensive exploration of molecular distillation, a powerful tool in chemistry for separating and purifying substances. The author delves into the historical development of the technique, tracing its roots back to early experiments in vacuum distillation and highlighting the groundbreaking work of BrÃÂ nsted and Hevesy in the early 20th century. The text examines the various types of molecular stills, their design, and their applications in different fields. The book emphasizes the importance of molecular distillation for handling delicate organic compounds and highlights its ability to separate substances at lower temperatures than traditional methods, minimizing thermal decomposition. The author meticulously examines the use of molecular distillation in the purification of oils, fats, and vitamin concentrates, and explores its potential in the synthesis of polymers and the study of complex biochemical reactions. The book provides a valuable resource for researchers and students in chemistry, chemical engineering, and related fields, offering a detailed understanding of the principles, techniques, and applications of molecular distillation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. This book, the result of years of extensive study, explores the intricate and fascinating relationship between vertebrate photoreceptors and their remarkable ability to transform light into electrochemical signals. The author provides a comprehensive account of the structure and function of rods and cones, the two primary types of photoreceptors found in the vertebrate retina. Through a detailed examination of their cellular architecture and physiological properties, the book sheds light on the fundamental mechanisms underlying vision and the diverse visual adaptations that have evolved in different vertebrate species. The author's meticulous analysis unravels the intricate interplay between photoreceptor structure and function, offering a deeper understanding of how these specialized cells enable us to perceive the visual world. This book is a valuable resource for students, researchers, and anyone seeking to unravel the complexities of vertebrate vision and its remarkable adaptations across the animal kingdom. Neuware - 'Insect and Disease Control as a Branch of Forest Protection' is a foundational study in the field of silviculture and forest management, authored by Samuel B. Detwiler. This work delves into the critical challenges of maintaining healthy forest ecosystems by addressing the dual threats of insect infestations and botanical diseases. Detwiler emphasizes the necessity of integrating protection measures into the broader framework of forest administration, arguing that the health of the timber resource is inseparable from its economic and ecological value.
