The rifle-caliber Browning was the most popular and most-used machine gun ever designed. The book discusses and illustrates in considerable detail the many variations on the basic recoil-operated Browning which were manufactured and/or used in over twenty countries, in both World Wars, in Korea and in Vietnam. Of particular interest is the focus on the aircraft Browning beginning in the Interwar years, in Britain and particularly in Belgium, where to keep pace with airspeeds of the best new fighters and pursuit aircraft Dieudonne Saive, John Browning's erstwhile chief assistant, twice increased the firing rate of the FN aircraft Browning, first in 1932 to 1,200 rpm and again in 1938 to 1,500 rpm. Second Edition, Expanded and Revised, 367 pages, Hard cover with a dust jacket, Over 500 illustrations. Maxim invented a self-powered machine gun, which performed all the necessary functions--loading, cocking, locking, firing, unlocking, extracting, ejecting, indexing and reloading--by means of the gun's own ammunition-instigated recoil energy, which others had described as "at best useless, and at worst dangerous". As the sun set forever on the era of the hand-cranked mahcine gun, consolidations and licensed production agreements turned the Maxim into a worldwide phenomenon. During World War I the Maxim earned the singular if somewhat dubious distinction of being the only gun used in virtually identical versions by both sides: "The Devel's Paintbrush" was an expression coined during the Great War by allied correspondents to describe the ghastly carnage wreaked by MG08 Maxims in the hands of elite German machine gun crews. Prototype and production versions of every sort of Maxim from over a dozen user countries are described and illustrated, along with the incredibly varied and ingenious array of accessories an ancillaies produced around the world during the Maxim's eighty-year lifespan. A fascinaing and valuable reference. Long out of print. A beautiful Very Fine As New copy at a reasonable price.

SYNOPSIS The story of the world's first true automatic machine gun begins right at the beginning and goes on to explain how the Maxim works and how it has been used and modified by armies across the world to devastating effect. Includes many expert tips on troubleshooting & restoring the highly collectible Maxim today. This celebrated study has been hailed as "simply the best book ever written about machine guns." FINE/FINE BOOK INFO Published in 2012 by Collector Grade Publications in Ontario, Canada. The preferred revised and greatly expanded third edition, an acclaimed classic. In its rich chocolate brown moroccoette boards with gilt spine lettering. With its original dust jacket carefully preserved in an archival Mylar wrap since sold new. Quarto, 11.25" x 8.75". 584 pages and 819 illustrations. "Devil's Paintbrush" is the nickname for the German MG08 machine gun, a World War I weapon based on the Maxim gun designed by Sir Hiram Maxim. The name refers to the devastating, wide-sweeping fire it laid down, which could "paint" a swath of destruction across the landscape, trapping soldiers in trenches. It was a heavy, tripod-mounted, water-cooled machine gun known for its high rate of fire and effectiveness as a defensive weapon. ABOUT THE PROLIFIC INVENTOR Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim (February 1840 - November 1916) was an American-born British inventor best known as the creator of the first automatic machine gun, the Maxim gun. Maxim held patents on numerous mechanical devices such as hair-curling irons, a mousetrap, and steam pumps. Maxim laid claim to inventing the lightbulb. Circa 1904 he designed a highly successful amusement ride called the "Captive Flying Machine" to fund his research while generating public interest in flight. Maxim moved from the United States to the United Kingdom at the age of 41 and remained an American citizen until he became a naturalized British citizen in 1899, receiving a knighthood in 1901. He also invented an apparatus for demagnetizing watches, magno-electric machines, devices to prevent the rolling of ships, eyelet and riveting machines, aircraft artillery, an aerial torpedo gun, coffee substitutes, and various oil, steam, and gas engines. After a large furniture factory had burned down, Maxim was consulted on how to prevent a recurrence. As a result, Maxim invented the first automatic fire sprinkler. Maxim developed and installed the first electric lights in a New York City building and was involved in several lengthy patent disputes with Thomas Edison over his claims to the lightbulb. After moving to England, he settled in a large house formerly owned by Lord Thurlow in West Norwood where he developed the Maxim gun in 1884. It was the first fully automatic machine gun in the world. It has had an immense and lasting impact on modern warfare. With arms sales led by Basil Zaharoff, variants of the Maxim gun were bought and used extensively by both sides during World War I. CONDITION REPORT The book is in FINE condition. Square spine, firm hinges and joints, sharp corners, tight pages and binding. Interior is like new with bright, white, clean pages without wear. No writing, ex libris marks or bookplates. The dust jacket is FINE - clean, colorful, unfaded, firm and tight. Minimal rubbing or wear of any kind. All in all, a superior collectible copy.
