Paperback. Condizione: Good. We ve all been there times when tumultuous events collide with our lives, sending us down an uncertain path of anger, fear, confusion, and despair. What exactly is the secret to effectively managing these difficult situations when they arise? In The Parallax, Donald Rickert, PhD, relies on his extensive teaching and research experience as he shares a compelling story of restitution and forgiveness with the goal of teaching others, through his characters examples, how to effectively manage change and improve personal effectiveness. As Atlanta police captain Francis Ryan Beck and his wife, Sarah, celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary in a cabin in the Colorado Rockies, catastrophic world events interrupt their plans and force a reexamination of their relationship. As Frank and Sarah learn to see things differently, they not only begin changing their self-limited paradigms, but also begin affecting those around them in profound ways. The Parallax provides hope and helps others discover their own personal stories, ultimately enabling the kind of positive change that encourages a new way of looking at life and those we love.…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Former homicide investigator Hunter Rayne follows the white lines north on the Alaska Highway, but a truck breakdown forces him to take an unscheduled stop in Whitehorse, Yukon, where he started his career as a rookie cop. While his Freightliner is awaiting repairs, Hunter takes a side trip to bush Alaska where a chance meeting with a young Alaskan woman reawakens his interest in a baffling cold case. A reclusive trapper and his young girlfriend disappeared from a bloody cabin in 1972, leaving their sled dogs chained outside. Riddles from the past coupled with a recent murder find Hunter back in investigative mode with the blessings of Whitehorse RCMP boss Bartholomew Sam, son of a shaman and Hunter's old friend. He finds himself searching the banks of the mighty Yukon River for a tough old bush woman who may hold the key to more than one bloody death. It's a vivid reminder that the breathtaking beauty of the northern wilderness camouflages its brutal indifference to human life. What readers are saying about Sundown on Top of the World and the Hunter Rayne Highway Mysteries: Very good continuation of a strong series, and the best so far. I have read and enjoyed all of the Hunter Rayne series. This is the best one to date with more intriguing characters and lots of action . I'd highly recommend any of R.E. Donald's books, especially this one. Hunter Rayne mysteries never let you down. Always well written, well edited and, most importantly, very well plotted. Read and savor. Excellent book, tight plot and well written. The characters are likable and the solution well hidden until the end . I am hooked Another very satisfying read in the Hunter Rayne series. Hunter is a very introspective nuanced character, and the settings and plots are new and refreshing. Hunter Johnsen (illustratore). …

Condizione: Fair. The Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division had just finished the battle for the bridge too far, Field Marshal Montgomery's ill-fated Operation Market Garden. As Christmas 1944 approached, the division was settling in for some hard earned rest and recuperation. Despite its failure to hold the Rhine River bridgehead at Arnhem a few weeks earlier, Eisenhower's Allied juggernaut appeared unstoppable. Then, Hitler ordered a massive Nazi counterattack through the supposedly impenetrable Ardennes Forest. The overwhelming armor-heavy Wehrmacht forces cut through the thinly-manned Allied lines, racing for Antwerp and the coast. German victory in what is now known at the Battle of the Bulge would split the Allied armies, cripple their attack against the Reich, and lengthen the war, perhaps by years. The author and the rest of the Screaming Eagles were rushed to Bastogne, a small Belgian crossroads town where seven roads met. The lightly-armed paratrooper became 'the cork in the bottle' of the Nazi onslaught. Bastogne became the key to German victory. They immediately found themselves in close combat. Without enough ammunition or food, in freezing weather with deep snow, they even lacked winter clothing. Yet, for eleven days they held out against the best the Nazis could throw at them, buying the time needed for Patton's Third Army to redeploy form the south. Burgett's memoir (he was not yet twenty years old at the time of the battle) is an exciting and enduring testament to the Screaming Eagles and their epic defense of Bastogne. Donald R. Burgett is the author of three additional books; Currahee a critically acclaimed memoir of the Normandy invasion, Road to Arnhem and Beyond the Rhine.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. More than a hundred years ago, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a novel called The Lost World with the exciting premise that dinosaurs and other prehistoric beasts still ruled in South America. Little did Conan Doyle know, there were terrifying monsters in South America--they just happened to be extinct. In fact, South America has an incredible history as a land where many strange creatures evolved and died out. In his book Giants of the Lost World: Dinosaurs and Other Extinct Monsters of South America, Donald R. Prothero uncovers the real science and history behind this fascinating story. The largest animal ever discovered was the huge sauropod dinosaur Argentinosaurus, which was about 130 feet long and weighed up to 100 tons. The carnivorous predator Giganotosaurus weighed in at more than 8 tons and measured more than 47 feet long, dwarfing the T. rex in comparison. Gigantic anacondas broke reptile records; possums evolved into huge saber-toothed predators; and ground sloths grew larger than elephants in this strange, unknown land. Prothero presents the scientific details about each of these prehistoric beasts, provides a picture of the ancient landscapes they once roamed, and includes the stories of the individuals who first discovered their fossils for a captivating account of a lost world that is stranger than fiction.…

Hardback. Condizione: Good. The theory of evolution unites the past, present, and future of living things. It puts humanity?s place in the universe into necessary perspective. Despite a history of controversy, the evidence for evolution continues to accumulate as a result of many separate strands of amazing scientific sleuthing. In The Story of Evolution in 25 Discoveries, Donald R. Prothero explores the most fascinating breakthroughs in piecing together the evidence for evolution. In twenty-five vignettes, he recounts the dramatic stories of the people who made crucial discoveries, placing each moment in the context of what it represented for the progress of science. He tackles topics like what it means to see evolution in action and what the many transitional fossils show us about evolution, following figures from Darwin to lesser-known researchers as they unlock the mysteries of the fossil record, the earth, and the universe. The book also features the stories of animal species strange and familiar, including humans?and our ties to some of our closest relatives and more distant cousins. Prothero?s wide-ranging tales showcase awe-inspiring and bizarre aspects of nature and the powerful insights they give us into the way that life works.Brisk and entertaining while firmly grounded in fundamental science, The Story of Evolution in 25 Discoveries is a captivating read for anyone curious about the evidence for evolution and what it means for humanity.…
