His technical expertise and willingness to experiment on a bold scale drew many famous and influential artists to his workshops, among them Frank Stella, Helen Frankenthaler, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Robert Rauschenberg, Anthony Caro and Jasper Johns. "The Highway Patrol" is the result of a 1976 interview with then-retired Highway Patrol Captain Chester R. Oliver, who told about the exploits of his early years with the Patrol as part of the original class of 55 recruits. "The Home Guard" is an account of the casualties and losses suffered by members of the Guard during the three month period around the notorious Battle of Cole Camp during the Civil War.
