This paper attempts to contextualize the renewed vigor with which ethical codes have been discussed in anthropo…logy in the 1990s. It outlines, with four historical sketches set in chronological order, different ways in which morals have been conceptualized and institutionalized in anthropology. It argues that the history of professional anthropology has been marked by a tension between an Occidental discourse on ethical duplicity and a more specifically anthropological epistemology of double identities. This has led to a situation of moral duplexity: an unintentional use of double standards in professional practice. An examination of the different ways in which this tension has worked out in different periods of the history of the discipline will show that the institutionalization of anthropological morals in the form of a code of ethical conduct is not only a very recent but in terms of professional aims a fairly unusual strategy. The emphasis now seems to lie on negotiation with the people studied as well as the sponsors of anthropological research, and this move may make the institutionalization of anthropological morals in an ethical code obsolete. This edition, published by Collins Clear Type Press, circa 1940 is a handsome cloth-bound hardcover, complete with dust-jacket issued in their Library of Classics, and h…as an Introduction by R. W. Drawbell. George Douglas Brown was a Scotsman, born in Ochiltree, Ayreshire in 1869. He decided to write the novel using only his first and middle name. This was his only novel, but it was very popular at the time of it first publication. This Scottish realist novel is a somewhat difficult work to tackle, using as it does the curiosities of the local language and a fairly dense prose. But it is well worth the reading. The novel paints a grim picture of economic warfare played out by the local Scottish businessmen against each other. At the center is the market town of Barbie and the Gourlay family, ruled over by John Gourlay. As depicted by George Douglas , Gourlay is a bitter, driven man, seemingly at war with the world, and especially jealous of any perception on his part that his neighbors might be outpacing him in the acquisition of economic success. Drawbell says, in his introduction : "The strength of the characterisation is that you accept Gourlay. You know him to be true. You never doubt his tempers or his tantrums. He is gloriously alive. And for all his faults you never doubt his manhood. He may be gross, he may be brutal, but he is definitely a man. And in the company of the 'bodies' of Barbie, a man among mongrels." Generic decoration displays Collins device of a fountain. on the front panel; 317 pages. CONDITION -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- Compression to the spine extremities, most noticeable at the foot of the spine; fading to foot of spine, and slightly to head of spine; corner tips of covers are softly bumped (just slightly so); over all clean with but near-negligible signs of wear. Strong color. Top text-block is rubbed and somewhat faded; fore-edge and bottom edges are somewhat rubbed, else clean. BINDING -- Solid INTERIOR -- Clean and free of marking. DUST-JACKET -- Spine extremities are slightly tatty (Small surface loss, minute tears and a bit of loss); spine panel surface is rubbed; else jacket displays modest rub, but is basically clean and presentable.
