Sie stammt aus der griechischen Antike und spielte insbesondere in den meinungsbildenden Prozessen in Athen eine herausragende Rolle. Die Aufgabe der Rede ist es, den Zuhörer von einer Aussage zu überzeugen oder zu einer bestimmten Handlung zu bewegen. Insofern die Rhetorik die Kunst der Rede ist, stellt sie hierzu die Mittel bereit, als Theorie der Überzeugung analysiert sie diese. In dieser Hinsicht enthält Rhetorik immer eine Doppelaufgabe und soll sowohl Kunst als auch Wissenschaft sein. Schon bevor die erste ausdrückliche Theorie der Überzeugung von Aristoteles ausgearbeitet worden war, gab es die Praxis der Rhetoriklehrer und existierten Rhetorikhandbücher. Die Rhetoriker gehörten zudem teilweise zur Bewegung der Sophisten und legitimierten die Überredung mit der Ansicht, dass eine Wahrheit nicht existiere oder wenn, sie nicht erkennbar sei. Im Mittelalter gehörte die Rhetorik neben Logik und Grammatik zum Trivium des in der Antike entstandenen Kanons der Sieben freien Künste. In der Aufklärung wurde der Rhetorik vorgeworfen, den Fokus nicht auf die Vernunft und die rationale Erkenntnis zu lenken, und sie wurde zunehmend aus dem Alltag, den Wissenschaften und dem Denken verdrängt. Daher wird unter Rhetorik meist nur noch eine Technik der Rede und der Textanalyse bzw. eine Theorie und Praxis der Rede und des Gesprächs verstanden.
