It is the most intimate and illuminating sort of natural history. The pictures reproduced herewith are particularly notable as they are perhaps the first good photographs of beaver ever secured, the nocturnal habits and shyness of these animals making them peculiarly difficult subjects for the animal photographer.".

He saw action in France during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. His powerful and evocative account of his military service was first published in 1918 under the title When The Somme Ran Red.
