Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Plum hardcover with gilt titles, borders & designs, 10 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches, binding nearly new with slight shelf-wear. Small ink number inside front cover, 568 clean pp., tight. Several maps, illustrations. First published in French in three volumes, Yverdon, Switzerland (1781). It was printed in… English in 1866, but with defects in the translation, and both are hard to find. This is a completly new and accurate translation into English.Pierre Pouchot (1712-1769), b. Grenoble, France; d. Corsica. He was a military engineer, an officer in the French regular troops, and served with distinction in the War of Austrian Succession, winning the order of Saint-Louis and a captain's command. He was sent to Kingston, Ontario, in 1754 at the outbreak of the war with the English on the American continent, and was the key engineer in building and repairing the French defences, including those of Fort Niagara; he also commanded the building of the seige works at Fort Oswego. He was raised in rank to Lieutenant Colonol, and after work in several other locations was appointed commandant of Fort Niagara. He was influential with the Indian tribes of New York, persuading many of them to side with the French against the English. He overestimated the security of his position, sent much of his forces to aid in an attempt upon Fort Pitt, leaving the fort badly undermaned. It was captured by the British, and Pouchet was later exchanged."Pouchot's memoirs are especially valuable for the seiges of forts Niagara and Lévis. The reflect the dismay of the regular French troops at being consigned piecemeal to the colonies and their disdain for the Canadians. Pouchot was amused by the colonial veneration for military ranks and honours and noted the relative emancipation of the women. Like many Europeans he was fascinated by the American Indians." - Dictionary of Canadian Biography online.

Hardback. Condizione: New. The Second Vatican Council's declaration Dignitatis Humanae marks a significant advance over prior magisterial teaching about the right to religious liberty, yet the nature of this advance has long been subject to controversy. Is it a true development, conserving and extending what came before? Or does… it instead chart a new course entirely, rejecting and replacing the older teaching? Here, R. Michael Dunnigan takes up these pressing questions and offers a careful examination of how the claims of Dignitatis Humanae relate to the magisterial precedents set by the papacy in the nineteenth century. With precision and nuance, Dunnigan analyzes the object, scope, and foundation of the right to religious liberty itself, and his analysis culminates in the proposal that the "right" endorsed by Vatican II is not identical with the "rights" condemned by previous popes.Beyond establishing the claims of Dignitatis Humanae as a true development of prior teaching, Dunnigan shows that its contribution to the question of religious liberty has not yet received full appreciation. Indeed, Dunnigan demonstrates how the Vatican II declaration reaffirms, reinforces, and even revivifies prior magisterial teaching on religious liberty through its emphasis on human integrity, which emerges as a foundational but often overlooked principle of continuity.

Hardcover. 568 p. Footnotes. Maps and Plans. Illustrations. Bibliography. Index. The purposed of this new translation of Pierre Pouchot's Memoires sur la derniere guerre is to make an important work on the Seven Years War in American more readily available to both scholars and enthusiasts, especially those who do not read French…. The rarity of both the original edition of 1781 and the 1866 Franklin Hough translation has limited the use of the information provided by Pouchot's rich narrative. Very good. No dust jacket as issued.
