Condizione: Very good. First Edition. Engraving in a paper frame; sheet 8 1/2 x 5 3/4, with frame 10 1/2 x 7 3/4; subtitle and facsimile signature below portrait; very minor age-toning to margins and tiny, barely-visible pin holes to corners; in very good or better condition.Created after a portrait by famed miniaturist painter Sarah Goodrich, nee Goodridge (1788 - 1853), the engraving depicted Rhode Island Colony artist Gilbert Charles Stuart (1755 - 1828), who would be considered one of America's top portraitists. The creator, Asher Brown Durand (1796 - 1886) of the Hudson River School, would gain tremendous recognition as one of the country's finest engravers after engraving the Declaration of Independence for John Trumbull in 1823. He would largely switch from engraving to oil painting in the 1830s.

Prima edizione
First Edition. Quarto (28cm) signed in twos. Original paper-covered boards, with printed spine label; 199,12pp; 9 leaves of plates bound in at rear. Early ink ownership signature to title page (John Wheeler). A complete but worn copy. Covers are somewhat rubbed and worn, with some flaking of paper at spine and portions of printed spine label rubbed away; text conspicuously foxed throughout; half-title lacking; front endpaper partially excised, one plate partially detached at gutter. Text is uncut, and despite the prominent foxing to text, the plate leaves are mostly unblemished. Complete and Good. An infrequently encountered American surgical text. Anderson, who trained at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, emigrated to America in 1820 and, after delivering a series of anatomical lectures in New York under the patronage of Valentine Mott (the current work was published to supplement these lectures), became affiliated with the Vermont Academy of Medicine (see Kelly, American Medical Biographies. NY: 1920). This work is notable for the nine anatomical plates, all engraved by A.B. [Asher Brown] Durand, including four engraved from his original illustrations. These are quite early works by Durand, who would achieve his first prominence as the engraver of John Trumbull's edition of the Declaration of Independence (1823) and later great renown as a landscape painter of the Hudson River School, from about 1840 on. Not cited in any of the standard medical bibliographies, and infrequent in commerce with only a single copy traced at auction in the past 50 years (Swann, 1979).

Engraving. Trimmed just outside or to the platemark. Sheet size: 17 x 12 3/8 inches. Unrecorded proof of a seminal American engraving. Asher Durand was hailed as the most famous engraver in America" and "the father of American landscape painting. His bold clean style was an immediate success, and he consequently produced some of the most important engravings in American print history. "Musidora was Durand's first major effort in engraving from an original design. The theme was inspired by 'The Seasons,' a poem by the Scottish poet James Thomson. In the 1825 engraving, the young Musidora moves cautiously to the bank of the woodland stream, and illustrates Thomson's lines, which are inscribed on the print . John Durand called this work a product of his father's 'inner consciousness'." (Hudson River Museum). The original drawing for the work is located at the New York Public Library. This example is a very fine, dark impression in an unrecorded proof state (i.e. before the date added to the end of Durand's imprint, prior to the printer's imprint below the quote from Thomson's Seasons, and with the title lightly engraved). In Thompson's pastoral poem, the section in which Musidora appears describes her bathing in a secluded stream. While bathing, she is unaware that a male admirer, Damon, secretly watches her from a hidden vantage point. Durand's image of Musidora implicates viewers in Damon's act of voyeurism, compelling them to assume the role of the male gaze. This perspective confronts us with our own participation as voyeurs, akin to Damon's intrusive gaze. In this context, "Musidora" exemplifies the multifaceted nature of the female nude in art, prompting viewers to reflect on their own complicity in the act of looking. Just as Durand's portrayal challenges viewers to embody Damon's intrusive gaze, it underscores the broader dialogue that surrounds the depiction of the female form in art. Beyond being a mere visual representation, this print calls upon us to engage with the centuries-old discourse surrounding the female nude and serves as a thought-provoking entry point into the complex world of art and representation. The Grolier Club, Catalogue of the Engraved Work of Asher B. Durand (New York: 1895), 236; Stauffer 683; Hudson River Museum, Asher B. Durand: An Engraver's and a Farmer's Art (Yonkers: 1983) 27.

Engraving, open letter mounted India paper proof, pencil signed by Durand at the lower right on the mount. Plate size: 17 1/8 x 20 5/8 inches. Sheet size: 20 x 22 1/2 inches. Grolier viii/viii; Stauffer iii/iii. Signed, India paper proof of Durand's most acclaimed and most controversial work. Asher Durand was hailed as "the most famous engraver in America" and "the father of American landscape painting". His bold clean style was an immediate success, and he consequently produced some of the most important engravings in American print history. "The most noted achievements of Mr. Durand's burin are his two plates of the nude -- Musidora, after his own design, published in 1825, and the Ariadne, after Vanderlyn's masterpiece, published a decade later -- in both of which the rendering of the flesh is particularly successful. There was not only a boldness in essaying such works at that time . but there was a nobility of purpose, that carried the artist successfully through to their completion, that must win our admiration" (The Grolier Club). "Ariadne was a Cretan princess briefly loved by Theseus. He abandoned her, however, on the island of Naxos, and she is shown here in her desolation. Durand modified Vanderlyns crisp Neoclassicism, infusing it with a romantic softness and compensating for prudish American tastes by rendering the drapery opaque" (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 97.29.2). The work was praised by the New York Spectator (October 15, 1835) as "decidedly, the finest example of line engraving ever produced in this country." But while critically acclaimed, the work was a commercial failure as the art buying public did not accept the nude figure as appropriate art. According to his son in his biography of his father, Durand engraved Ariadne purely as a labor of love. The Grolier Club, Catalogue of the Engraved Work of Asher B. Durand (New York: 1895), 237; Stauffer 682; Asher B. Durand: An Engraver's and a Farmer's Art (Hudson River Musem: 1983) 65.

Contemporary full calf presentation binding with New York City seal blind stamped on front and back boards, both of which are elaborately gilt, the front board reading "Presented by the City of New York to Henry Rutgers Esq. As a Tribute of Respect to His Public & Private Virtues." Six raised bands forming seven compartments on spine, with elaborate gilt foliate designs in second, fourth, and sixth compartments, and gilt titling in third and fifth compartments. Gilt dentelles, tan marbled endpapers, marbled edges Provenance: Henry Rutgers (1745-1830): New York politician and the namesake of Rutgers University. W. B. Crosby, executor of Rutgers's estate, signed the title page in ink manuscript One of the earliest works with lithograph illustrations in the United States; a copy presented by the City of New York to Henry Rutgers in an elaborately gilt calf presentation binding. The first book with an illustration by George Catlin. Published upon the completion of the Erie Canal, Colden's Memoir describes the route of the canal, the history of canal development, and the navigable waterways of the Northeast. The Erie Canal was the greatest feat in early American engineering history. It connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean, and required 400 miles or more of canal-building. It was first proposed in 1699, formally begun in 1819, and opened on October 26, 1825. The Grand Canal Celebration on November 4, 1823 is comprehensively illustrated herein. The calf extra presentation binding on the present copy is a spectacular and elaborate souvenir of these extravagant celebrations surrounding the official completion of the monumental Erie Canal. The canal proved to be the key that unlocked an enormous series of social and economic changes in the young nation, spurred the first great westward movement of American settlers, gave access to the rich land and resources west of the Appalachians, and made New York the preeminent commercial city in the United States. The lithographs in this volume hold an important place in the history of American printmaking. The scenes of Buffalo and Lockport are the first lithograph town views published in the United States, and are the earliest examples of the work of George Catlin (1796-1872), best-known for his North American Indian Portfolio (1844). Interestingly, the work includes a description and history of the lithograph process on pages 349-351, among the earliest such descriptions in America. All of the lithographs were executed by Anthony Imbert, who Harry Peters called the "pioneer lithographer of New York City." Particularly noteworthy is the fold-out illustration showing the canal's complete route in cross-section. The book also contains nine "Autograph Facsimiles" of letters from both Adamses, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Lafayette, and others. New York City politician, wealthy landowner, and philanthropist Henry Rutgers's personal copy of Colden's Memoir, published to celebrate the opening of the Erie Canal. Rutgers served in the New York State Assembly from 1783-84, the New York Board of Education Regents from 1802-26, and was a Presidential elector in 1808, 1816, and 1820. Rutgers owned considerable property in Manhattan, and donated numerous parcels of land for the use of schools, churches, and charities. He is remembered for his donation of a $5,000 bond to what was then called Queen's College in New Brunswick, New Jersey, which saved the school from permanent closure. In gratitude, the trustees of the college renamed the institution in his honor, and it is now known as Rutgers University. He served, alongside Colden, on the board of the Bank for Savings in the City of New York, one of the earliest banks in the United States and the country's first savings bank. Deák 339. Howes C-562.
