All'indomani dell'invasione garibaldino-sabauda, le critiche al regime sabaudo imposto nei territori dell'ormai ex Regno delle Due Sicilie si diffusero ampiamente. Le prime voci furono quelle dei legittimisti, legati alla Dinastia borbonica e perseguitati dal nuovo regime, ma ben presto il malgoverno "piemontese" fece allargare il numero degli scontenti si allargò anche a coloro che erano stati fautori dell'unità (i cosiddetti italianissimi): mazziniani repubblicani, garibaldini snobbati all'interno dell'esercito, cavourriani fautori dell'ordine che criticavano l'eccessiva presenza di camorristi nei posti di comando (dove peraltro erano stati chiamati dagli stessi Piemontesi). Durelli raccoglie e commenta una serie di giornali di tutta Italia (piemontesi, lombardi, liguri, fiorentini e napoletani, ma cita anche tre testate francesi), facendo parlare direttamente i rivoluzionari, cioè i fautori del Risorgimento, ed usando dunque una fonte più che attendibile per criticare senza mezzi termini il processo unitario.
