It presents difficulties also to anyone trying to find a central basis for the comprehensive history of this important part of Europe, a history which is different from the West in its geographical, ethnic, and cultural aspects. As his basis for studying this complicated period, Father Dvornik takes the Slavic nations and treats them as an organic unity. No other book of this type and range exists in any language. Drawing upon original sources in Latin, Greek, and Old Slavonic, and from a wide variety of scholarly authorities, the author presents in the compass of a single volume a complete, chronologically arranged history of the Slavic peoples and their neighbors from the Middle Ages through the early modern period. He describes the influence of the rest of Europe on the Slavs and the contribution of the Slavs to the political and cultural growth of the world. In view of the American interest in constitutional and cultural history, Professor Dvornik has devoted several sections of his book to Slavic laws and institutions, to creative arts and literature, as well as to religious history. For readers interested in special questions, Father Dvornik has included a detailed index, as well as a bibliography unique in its extent and its judicious selection of works of major importance.
