Paperback. Condizione: Good. Combining the perspectives of 18 international scholars from Europe and the United States with a critical discussion of the role of culture in international relations, this volume introduces recent trends in the study of Culture and International History. It systematically explores the cultural dimension of international history, mapping existing approaches and conceptual lenses for the study of cultural factors and thus hopes to sharpen the awareness for the cultural approach to international history among both American and non-American scholars. The first part provides a methodological introduction, explores the cultural underpinnings of foreign policy, and the role of culture in international affairs by reviewing the historiography and examining the meaning of the word culture in the context of foreign relations. In the second part, contributors analyze culture as a tool of foreign policy. They demonstrate how culture was instrumentalized for diplomatic goals and purposes in different historical periods and world regions. The essays in the third part expand the state-centered view and retrace informal cultural relations among nations and peoples. This exploration of non-state cultural interaction focuses on the role of science, art, religion, and tourism. The fourth part collects the findings and arguments of part one, two, and three to define a roadmap for further scholarly inquiry. A group of" commentators" survey the preceding essays, place them into a larger research context, and address the question "Where do we go from here?" The last and fifth part presents a selection of primary sources along with individual comments highlighting a new genre of resources scholars interested in culture and international relations can consult.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Thirteen dead black men, and nobody knows it happened, so says Johnny Smith, who sets out on a quest to make things right in the powerful novella that begins this collection - a masterpiece of collaged voices. Voice is urgent and significant--Dobson focuses throughout on the invisible and the unvoiced-he brings them to center stage, where they speak their pain and frustration. Maybe we can revise history, one of his characters says; Dobson's book does just that. Mary Grimm, novelist, professor, Case Western University In entrancing prose that claims a place with writers as powerful as Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, and John Edgar Wideman, Frank Dobson offers his own bold, subtle explorations of race and life in America. I sat down to skim a bit of his new book of stories, and ended up reading its central novella straight through. This narrative of the .22-Caliber killings in Buffalo - little known to most Americans-and the lives of blacks and whites caught up in those tense days makes for suspenseful, compelling reading. Jeff Gundy, poet, professor, Bluffton University.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. When the great-grandmother who raised him passes away, Storm Cassavettes leaves behind the life he's made for himself in Virginia and moves back to Western Maryland to claim his inheritance--which includes a Victorian house he never knew existed. And he slowly begins to find answers to the question of his family's past. But some things are better left unknown.Soon after his arrival in New Mystic, he discovers an old book lodged in the wall. It's a book filled with arcane symbols, weird drawings, and what appears to be incantations. To whom did it belong and how did it get into the wall? While Storm sleeps, a new world opens around him. A woman watches him sleep. Children play hide and seek downstairs in the dead of night. And Storm dreams--dreams of a mirror, of an ancient city in ruins, and of the same city resurrecting itself.…
