Als am 2. Februar 1943 die Schlacht um Stalingrad mit der Kapitulation der 6. deutschen Armee beendet wurde, begann augenblicklich der Kampf um ihre historische Wertung und Deutung. Die vernichtende Niederlage der bis dahin als unbesiegbar geltenden Wehrmacht wurde rasch mit mythologisierenden Begriffen und Bildern beschrieben - eine Art des Umgangs mit der Schlacht, die bis heute viele Darstellungen prägt. Der "Mythos Stalingrad" erhellt zwar nicht immer die militärischen Ereignisse, sagt dagegen aber viel über Intentionen, Geschichtsbilder und Wertungsmuster der an seiner Schaffung Beteiligten und die zeitgenössischen gesellschaftlichen Diskussionen aus. Seit 1942/43 wurde die Schlacht häufig mit ganz verschiedenen Ansätzen politisch-ideologisch instrumentalisiert. Konstant ist, daß der mythologische Ansatz stets durch "Authentizität" in Form dokumentarischen Materials gestützt wurde. Berichte und Briefe von Angehörigen der 6. Armee fanden und finden besonderes Interesse, zumal sie sehr rar sind. Zum 60. Jahrestag der großen Schlacht an der Wolga rief der frühere Bundesaußenminister Hans-Dietrich Genscher im Deutschlandfunk Köln dazu auf, noch nicht veröffentlichte Briefe von Angehörigen der Stalingrad-Armee einzusenden. Diese bislang unbekannten Zeugnisse werden im Band umfassend dokumentiert.
