Soft cover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Throughout Indian history, various individuals and groups have questioned, censured and debated authority-be it the state or empire, religious or political traditions, caste hierarchies, patriarchy or even the idea of god. These dissenting voices have persisted despite all attempts made…to silence them. They have inspired revolutions and uprisings, helped preserve individual dignity and freedom, and promoted tolerance and a plurality in thought and lifestyle. India Dissents: 3,000 Years of Difference, Doubt and Argument brings together some of these voices that have sustained India as a great and vibrant civilization. Collected in these pages are essays, letters, reports, poems, songs and calls to action-from texts ranging from the Rig Veda to Ambedkar's Annihilation of Caste; and by thinkers as varied as the Buddha, Akka Mahadevi, Lal Ded, Nanak, Ghalib, Tagore, Gandhi, Manto, Jayaprakash Narayan, Namdeo Dhasal, Mahasweta Devi and Amartya Sen. Their words embody the undying and essential spirit of dissent in one of the world's most diverse, dynamic and oldest civilizations.

Widely acknowledged as a master of modern Indian art, for nearly six decades his work, vision and life have attracted critical attention from various points of view. Raza returned to India, his home country, after spending 60 years in France and now lives in Delhi and continues to paint. The fact that he would be turning 93 years of age does not in any way diminish or slow down his zest both for living and painting. Raza has created nearly 50 new paintings in past six months. His imagination dares to explore new visual ideas, creating a language which is fresh and yet resonates with intense memories. Raza's art has been analysed, explored and evaluated in many books and continues to evoke new responses, also because he is still painting significantly and passionately. Collectors of his paintings exist worldwide. This fresh collection of essays offers new insights into the artistic career and life of a truly dynamic visionary of our times. The DVD accompanying this volume is an invaluable recording of Raza creating his collection Aarambh. Thus, this fresh perspective on his art is enriched by the knowledge of how that art came to be. After an early stint in Bombay, where he was a founding member of the Progressive Artists' Group, he moved to France, where he spent the next sixty years. This volume explores Raza's artistic trajectory from the time of his arrival in Paris, as well as his contribution to the development of modernism in the Indian subcontinent. Beginning with early works developed in India before 1947, the essays in this volume analyze Raza's later abstraction processes and landscapes. His strong thrust towards non-figurative art, and subsequent influences from European and American modernism, combined with Raza's own memories and impressions of India and led him to a skilful negotiation between Indian spirituality and Western abstraction. Raza's bold, failed experiment with the French Cubist style is also explored here, leading to the crucial moment when he decided he had to unlearn everything he knew. In addition to the essays, an anthology of previously unpublished letters offer glimpses of the master at work, and a detailed chrono-biography situates him within the trans-cultural dynamics of the 1950s to the 1980s. Accompanying the S.H. Raza exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2023, this catalogue presents a compelling overview of Raza's work and the highlights of his journey.
