Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. First thus. Very good/First thus Vincent Price liked the good life. He used to say that the reason he acted in so many schlocky horror movies was to pay for his art collection. He also collected fine wine. And he loved his food. He loved not only fine dining in fine restaurants but was also a go…urmet cook himself. He enjoyed sharing his passions as well, donating art to public collections, recording a course in wine appreciation, and teaching cookery whenever he had a chance. This book, "A Treasury of Great Recipes," published in 1965, was the first of several cookbooks Price wrote with his wife Mary, and incorporates recipes from the menus of famous restaurants from around the world.or, the world as someone from Price's time and class would have known it, meaning Western Europe and North America. Its 488 pages are tremendous fun for anyone who wants to join the jet set of the mid-'60s. It is loaded with full-page color photographs of restaurant dining rooms, of tables laden with food, of artfully prepared dishes, and of the Price's home, not to mention sepia-toned drawings at every turn. There are copies of restaurant menus, and short histories of restaurants and of dishes. One or both of the Prices seem to have written the captions themselves, which are actually quite informative and interesting. Starting at page 405, more prosaic but still useful information begins, with a chapter titled "Specialties of Our House" (Price recipes for dishes ranging from stuffed crown roast of veal to iced tea, as well as instructions for fancy napkin folding), followed by chapters telling readers how to make all kinds of sauces with their blenders and how to make all kinds of things to freeze for later. Even the end papers give information about a list of herbs and spices. The one thing that makes it difficult to give this copy a standard condition grade-"Very good" vs. "Good," for instance-is that the previous owner filled it with their own very readable, penciled, personal comments. None of these interfere with the legibility of the recipes themselves, and in many cases, in our opinion, they add to the book's charm, such as a recipe for asparagus vinaigrette from Sardi's that has the note, "I prefer white asparagus, Dave likes both." Others simply have checkmarks-one, two, or occasionally three, making for a code up for deciphering. Other than those notes, the book is in quite good condition. The binding is tight and square, with only a little wear: slightly bumped corners and light bumping to the top and bottom of the spine. The binding cloth has closed tears at the front joint for about an inch at the top and about half an inch at the bottom is surface damage and does not affect the workings of the joint or hinge itself. The binding is padded, bound in a dark gold cloth, with elaborate decoration. The front cover is filled with a printed dark brown label framed by elaborate large gold-stamped scrollwork. Gold lettering on top of the brown label spells out the title and the authors' names. That same printed label, without the frame and without the authors' names, is replicated on the spine, which includes a series of stamped gold lines going down the spine to create segments. The authors' names appear in one of these segments, again stamped in gold. It appears this title was published without a dust jacket. The pages show the expected age tanning for a 60-year-old book, and some pages have a bit of soiling-this is a cookbook that has been cooked with-as well as the aforementioned pencil notes. However, there are no tears or missing or loose pages, and all the recipes and illustrations are still quite clear. This would be a great book with which to recreate an era.or simply a good meal. Photos are forthcoming or available upon request. Kredel, Fritz (illustratore).
