In 1841 David Valentine began publishing an annual compilation of New York with historical information to show the citizenry the progress the city made each year. It was published under the title, Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York, a compendium of historical materials with illustrations, but it became known as Valentine's Manual. It included maps, lithographs and woodcuts, and contained many statistical tables, lists of social institutions, banks, schools, churches etc.

Tracy, on the editor's New York letterhead dated July 14, 1916. Second piece is a removed book map, 8" x 7", of "Plan of Aldermen's Chamber 1862" (with small closed tear and a fold). Also included is a single removed sheet from a book of "City Hall Government in 1862". A color illustrated Christmas card "when New York had just begun to observe the Christmas customs we cherish today" is also included.
