Aggiungi al carrelloCloth. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Poor. Centenary Edition. Hardback. FEP and BEP removed. Wear, tear and marks to D/J. Alice Meynell Esteemed the poetry of her middle and later years beyond that of her girlhood; a judgement with which the present editor concurs out of more that filial piety. Therefore, he places first in the book, according to her known wish, the poems of her maturity and age. These are followed by her early poems, here arranged in three divisions: those which she herself wished, or was persuaded, to reprint in her first Collected Edition (1913); those which through printed in Preludes (1875) or in periodicals, she later rejected from 'collected' editions; and those which she herselv refrained from publishing, but which were retrived from an early MS for the Oxford edition of 1940. To these very early pieces I think her readers have a right which the order of this reconciles with my mother's right to the clear labelling of them as self-rejected. In some instances they will add to her stature as a poet, in most as a critic. There are two poems which defy these categories, Renouncement was written before 1875, but not printed till 1882 nor collected until 1893; Singers to Come was printed in a magazine in 1877 but not collected till 1893. I place them where Alice Meynell chose to place them out of their time. (Francis Meynell). 192 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition - a compilation of various contributions. Published in January 1945 as the 'Service Edition' at the end of the Second World War - the anthology first appeared in June 1924 (as stated on the Bibliography page). ***Near fine in forest-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean, with just a light surface mark to the front board. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed and creased. No bumps or serious creases, and no tears to the fragile cloth. Corners sharp. Page block edges clean, with just very slight foxing. Binding square with no reading lean. Internally also near fine with no previous ownership inscriptions. The pages are clean, and although printed on very thin wartime paper, there are no creases or tears. Pages clean. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper, which is largely complete - with just some slight loss at the top of the spine and front panel - not affecting the titles. There is some rubbing, creasing and small closed tears commensurate with age and handling, but no serious creases or tears. The spine is slightly darkened and stained but the titles are still perfectly legible. The cream colour of the dustwrapper has become quite marked over the years due to age and handling (please see scans). ***190mm x 127mm. 392 pages. ***Contents: Preface, Poems (First Lines), Index of Songs, List of Poets, Great Poems, Hate Poems, State Poems, Epigrams, The Zoo, Songs, Games, Travels with a Donkey, Bird Song at Morning, Starshine at Night, Architecture, On Food and Drink, The Law and How You Break It, First Aid in Divers Crises, A List of Great Poems Not In This Book, Acknowledgement. ***'The Week-End Book was first published in June 1924. It then contained 332 pages without illustrations. With various additions and alterations it was reprinted in England seventeen times, to a total of more than fifty thousand copies. Other impressions were printed in the United States of America. In October 1928 was issued an enlarged edition (illustrated by Albert Rutherston) twice reprinted. This in turn was enlarged, in October 1930, and redecorated by T. L. Poulton. In October 1936 a new series of decorations were made by John Dronsfield, and in 1939 an edition was issued decorated by Edward Bawden. The present edition is being issued as a Service Edition, without any decorations. The total sales of all editions exceed two hundred thousand copies.' (Quote taken from the introductory Bibliography) ***A first impression of the true first edition, in the very thin and fragile original wartime dustwrapper. Copies of the Week-end Book from this period, in their original fragile dustwrappers, are very hard to find now. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
