"The Chittagong Hill Tracts is located in the southeastern part of Bangladesh bordering India s Northeastern region and Arakan province of Myanmar (Burma). It is inhabited by various ethnic groups the most important of which are the Chakmas, the Marmas, the Tripuras and the Mros. Together, they constitute approximately one percent of the population of Bangladesh but on account of their distinct language, ethnicity, religion and social structure, they present a challenge to the integration and development effort of Bangladesh. The Parbattya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samity (PCJSS) the Hill Tracts Peoples Solidarity Association formed in 1972 is the representative body of all the ethnic groups of the region. Very little was known about the various facets of the development process or of the obstacles to development in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The signing of the Peace Accord between the Government of Bangladesh and the PCJSS in December 1997 has created a favourable atmosphere for the development of the region. This study by BRAC is one of the pioneering work to understand the development needs of the Chittagong Hill Tracts." (jacket).

She demanded that the family be restructured on the basis of gender equality. A devout Muslim, she asked that women be recognised as human beings in their own right within practices of Islam. Born into an orthodox Muslim family, for Rokeya, the most vital way in which women could empower themselves was through education. The Sakhawat Memorial Girls School in Kolkata, started by Rokeya in 1911, still stands as an enduring testament to that belief. This collection of biographical and critical essays places Rokeya within the socio-cultural and historical context of her times to better appreciate her literary and social contributions in the face of the formidable challenges she faced as a Bengali Muslim woman. The essays also aim to understand why the extraordinary vision she had, not just for women but for an ideal, more gender-just society, continues to be as radical, powerful and relevant today, almost a century after her death. Minerals processing and beneficiation is an area of immense potential and growth for all the nations worldwide especially those which are endowed with nature's blessings in the form of abundant mineral resources. Minerals beneficiation is of great economic importance to the mining industry and the countries as a whole. The increasing demand for minerals is likely to increase the growth of infrastructure with rapid industrialization and exploitation of minerals. Unfortunately, these resources are not fully exploited in developing countries due to the lack of advanced skills, modern and innovative research and technology and the new world trade regime. Many minerals are still exported as ores, concentrates or metals, without significant downstream processing or value addition. Therefore there is an urgent need for the policy makers, scientists, technologists, academics and other industry experts to come together and assess ways and means to address the aforementioned skills gap. This publication is a follow up of the International Workshop on 'Minerals Processing and Beneficiation' organised at Johannesburg, South Africa during 25-27 September 2012 by the NAM S&T Centre jointly with the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Republic of South Africa. Qaisra Shahraz was born in Pakistan and brought up in Manchester, England, from the age of nine. She studied English and Classical civilization at the Univeristy of Manchester and went on to gain two Masters Degrees at the University of Salford in English and European Literature and in Scriptwriting for Television and Radio. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a member of the Royal Society of Literature. As a freelance journalist, she has contributed features and articles to various magazines and newspapers. Several of her short stories are published in the UK and abroad, in particular in schools anthologies in Germany. One of her short stories, Perchanvah, won the Ian St. James Award in 1994. she has appeared at several international literary festivals and written plays for radio and television, including a screenplay adaptation of her first novel. Her award-winning drama serial Dil Hee To Hai (The Heart Is It) was broadcast internationally. Qaisra Shahraz is the author of two novels The Holy Woman (2001) and Typhoon (2003) translated into numerous languages. The first is a powerful love story, introducing the reader to the traditions of a vibrant world of four Muslim countries. It was awarded the title Best Book of the Month by Waterstones. Typhoon is a sequel set in the fictitious village of Chiraghpur. She has recently completed a third novel, a volume of short stories and co-authored a literary textbook for German teachers entitled Emerging India. Qaisra Shahraz has another successful career in education, as a consultant, teachertrainer and college inspector for Ofsted. She was shortilisted for the Asian Women of Achievement Awards in 2002 and for the Muslim News Awards for Excellence in 2003. She lives with her family in Manchester.
