Hardbound. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition, so stated. Description: Includes six double sided black and white plates. David Meriwether was the territorial governor of New Mexico from 1853 to 1857. His accomplishments as governor are well recorded and frequently cited by historians. However, the events of his life prior to that time had been largely unknown. David Meriwether's life up to that point was a remarkable one -- in 1819 he went to the Upper Missouri under contract to Colonel John O'Fallon; in 1820 he saw Santa Fe as a prisoner of the Spaniards; he lived with three companions on the Great Plains through the bitter winter of 1820-21; and became a trader at Fort Osage. In 1886, at the age of 86, Meriwether dictated these memoirs to his granddaughter. A copy of that manuscript descended to a great granddaughter, which made possible this publication. This is Volume 46 of the publishers American Exploration and Travel Series. BINDING/CONDITION: brown cloth with black and gilt spine decorations, the top edge tint is a pale red; one corner is bumped, otherwise a Near Fine book, with a Good dust jacket; publisher's price on the jacket flap is intact. The jacket is very good but for a scuff and stain on the spine (about the size of a fifty cent piece). bibliography, index. 8vo (about 9.25 inches tall). 301 pages.
