Octavo, blue boards (hardcover), gilt lettering, map illus. endpapers, 241 pp. Very Good in a Good, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear and a sticker to the spine. From dust jacket: The brief and violent history of Fort Ticonderoga is a microcosm of the two major conflicts which raged across the North American continent in Colonial days -- the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. Dominating the narrows where Lake George empties into Lake Champlain, this fortress was of great strategic importance to armies whose supplies and artillery almost certainly had to come by water. Therefore in the short twenty years following its building in 1755, Fort Ticonderoga was assaulted six times, three times successfully. Within the chronological framework of the various campaigns, Edward Pierce Hamilton re-creates the atmosphere of rugged Colonial life, and gives the famous names of the American heritage a fresh and bold reality. Early in the seventeenth century the first white man penetrated the Ticonderoga area -- Samuel de Champlain came down from the north with a band of marauding Iroquois. Two months later Henry Hudson struggled up from the south. This near-meeting of explorers from two different nations heralded nearly a century of struggle for control of the Champlain Valley, an importance campaign of the French and Indian War. This conflict had its black chapters, such as the Indian massacre of British prisoner Lake George, but also its brighter ones -- the strategy of the brilliant French general, Montcalm, the courageous tactics of Britain's Wolfe. Following the British victory, the battered Fort Ticonderoga lapsed into decay until the outbreak of the Revolution. Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen were responsible for "the first really overt military act of the Revolution," the seizure of the fort from the sleeping British. The author relates the tense shipbuilding race for water supremacy on the lakes, and General Burgoyne's successful thrust into the Colonies. Revolutionary War, United States History, U. S. History, American History, Americana, U.S.-iana, Military History xslic.
