Letter. Condizione: Very Good. Autograph; 8vo; 1 pages; Typed Letter Signed by Edwin Tribble to Rowland Evans on Personal Printed Letterhead. "April 4, 1981 // Dear Mrs. Evans, // I could not have wished for the Wilson letters to have / fallen into more sympathetic hands. Thank you for your review and / for the kind words about…editing. I did work on it longer and / harder than the size of the book would indicate and it makes me very / happy to know that somebody recognizes that - especially another / editor. // As a man who enjoys coincidences, I was pleased too that / advance news of your piece came to us from so valued a new friend / as Catherine Evans. We've a lot to be grateful to the Evans family for this year! // With best wishes, / Ed Tribble [Signed] Edwin Tribble, a former city editor and Sunday editor of the old Washington Star, came to Washington on Nov. 17, 1933, to take a job on The Star as a copy editor. He was city editor from 1949 to 1958 and Sunday editor from 1958 until he retired in 1972. The latter job gave scope to his interest in books and the arts. In the course of his career Mr. Tribble was noted for the skill with which he trained several generations of reporters. His instructions to beginning newspaper people were succinct: "Get it straight, make it simple, keep it short." In the late 1970s, he edited the letters of Woodrow Wilson and Edith Bolling Galt. His book "A President in Love : The Courtship Letters of Woodrow Wilson and Edith Bolling Galt" was published in 1981 with considerable success. PROVENANCE: Rowland Evans was a provocative newspaper columnist, commentator and author who antagonized liberal politicians and championed conservative causes. He left Yale and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 during World War II and was discharged in 1944 because of malaria. In 1963, Mr. Evans and Mr. Novak began writing ''Inside Report,'' an insider's view of politics that was published four times a week until Mr. Evans retired in 1993. Mr. Evans and Robert Novak began their work as columnists in the early 1960's, a time when newspaper columnists wielded outsize influence in national politics. The pair pioneered in transferring that influence to the medium of cable television with the political discussion program ''Evans & Novak'' -- carried on CNN from that cable network's beginning. Rowland Evans and his wife Kay (Katherine Winton Evans), also a respected writer and editor, were mainstays on the Washington social scene, hosting many memorable gatherings in their handsome Georgetown house -- to which flocked influential and remarkable people drawn from journalism, politics and general society over the decades from the 1960s to the 2000s. Both Evans and Novak became more predictably conservative over the years, particularly during the Reagan years. Reportedly, both columnists voted for JFK in 1960 and for Lyndon Johnson in 1964. Evans earned a place on Richard Nixon's infamous "Enemies List." Novak reported that Evans had JFK as a guest for the first dinner party the latter attended as President Elect. Kay and Rowland Evans has a particularly close friendship with Robert F. Kennedy, his wife Ethel and their family.; Signed by Author.
