Soft cover. Condizione: New. Log 19 tracks the reemergence of social considerations in architectural discourse, questioning what role architecture can and should play in society. The parametric is alternatively valorized and disavowed; Ron Arad s new museum is ransacked while Office KGDVS is coaxed from its silence; Georges Teyssot unravels J. Mayer H.'s sinuous Metropol Parasol project in Seville; Allan Weiss meditates on the garden at Ryoan-ji; Eric Owen Moss pays homage to Raimund Abraham; Tom Weaver reads poetry and the tedious prose of Leon Krier's Poundbury; Wes Jones reconsiders architecture as a game; Thomas de Monchaux writes on ''Rising Currents'' and the unexceptional reconstruction of Downtown Manhattan; plus observations on orphic Modernism in the forests of Asuncion, the flatness of Herzog & de Meuron's sets for ''Attila,'' a portfolio from the Hague, and more.

Trade Paperback. Condizione: Used - Very Good. Log 19 brims with informed debate and argument on the state of architecture today. Like the models for the invited international design competition for the Dance and Music Center in The Hague, these articles, when taken together, can be understood as a cross-section of how one makes architecture now. Is it as form? Function? Material? Cost? Context? Politics? What are the limits of representation in architecture? Log 19 takes parametrics to task, considers the consequences of climate change and environmental catastrophe, while examining the physical edges and conceptual boundaries of architecture. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks.

Forged in a rarefied architectural climate dominated by postwar Marxist-Freudian trends, the Austrian avantgarde challenges the traditional paradigms of objecthood, compositional form, programmatic functionality, and spatial closure closure, emphasizing the fictional and the fantastic embodied in the more peripheral notions within the modern tradition: glass, ornament, machine mysticism, and the organic gestural line. Size: Quarto. Book.
Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. A novel exploration of the idea of nonlinear time and its place at the heart of modern art and architecture Through much of the twentieth century, a diverse group of thinkers engaged in an interdisciplinary conversation about the meaning of time and history for modern art and architecture. The group included architects Louis Kahn, Eero Saarinen, James Gamble Rogers, and Paul Rudolph; artists Anni and Josef Albers; philosopher Paul Weiss; and art historians Sibyl Moholy-Nagy, Henri Focillon, George Kubler, and Vincent Scully. These figures were unified by their resistance to the idea that, in order to be considered modern, art and architecture had to be of its time, as well as by the pivotal place that Yale University held as a backdrop to their thinking. The group sponsored a new kind of approach, one that Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen terms untimely, emphasizing a departure from a sequential course of events. Ideas about temporal duration, new tradition, the presence of the past, and the shape of time were among the concepts they explored. With an interdisciplinary focus and original research, Pelkonen reveals previously unexplored connections between key figures of American intellectual and artistic culture at midcentury whose works and words would shape modern architecture. A novel exploration of the idea of nonlinear time and its place at the heart of modern art and architecture Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
