Partiendo de premisas feministas y marxistas, Ekman examina tanto la prostitución sexual como la prostitución reproductiva o uterina (los llamados vientres de alquiler ) como dos instituciones que comercializan y explotan las mujeres. La apropiación y explotación de la sexualidad y la capacidad reproductiva del cuerpo de las mujeres ha sido, y es, uno de los fundamentos de las sociedades patriarcales pero también un frente de lucha histórico del movimiento feminista. El libro presenta un análisis de los argumentos harto semejantes que, bajo un aparente progresismo, sirven para legitimar esta explotación. Estas industrias, nos dice Ekman, son el producto de la intersección del capitalismo (donde los ricos compran a los pobres) y del patriarcado (donde los hombres compran a las mujeres, y las mujeres complacen a hombres), sin olvidar la presencia del racismo y de las relaciones neocoloniales Norte-Sur. Frente a los discursos que presentan estos sistemas como innovadores e inocuos, Ekman nos muestra el daño real que estas estructuras causan a las mujeres implicadas: tanto la prostitución como la maternidad subrogada no son actos anodinos sin consecuencias para la vida y la salud de las mujeres.
