It seems that the destiny of South East Asia, at least as far as art is concerned, is inversely proportional to that of the international economic situation and to the consequent ability to react when faced with catastrophe. In 2004, at the height of a flourishing global economy, Southeast Asia--including Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines--suffered one of the deadliest catastrophes in the history of humankind, the Asian Tsunami. It began with an under-ocean earthquake which sparked a series of devastating tsunamis that eventually killed more than 225,000 people in 11 countries. Emerging from this post-tsunami era is a generation of artists who are hitting their collective stride and attracting the interest of international collectors and institutions as artists of this region never have before--as if their energy might prove a source of renewal for the rest of the world. This volume documents an exhibition of 18 such artists--Yee I-Lann, Entang Wiharso, Agus Suwage, Haris Purnomo, Wayan Suja, Gede Mahendra Yasa, Ketut Moniarta, Ristyo Eko (R.E.) Hartanto, Davy Linggar, Ronald Ventura, Yasmin Sison, Geraldine Javier, Nona Garcia, Annie Cabigting, Wire Tuazon, Alfredo Esquillo, Lyra Garcellano and Emmanuel Santos--held at Milan's Primo Marella Gallery.

Towering skyscrapers, manned space flights, the Olympics. From some angles, the new China is a country of dreams fulfilled, of glory and pride. But with new pleasures come new desires, new utopias to imagine just around the bend. These Fancy Dreams from 10 young artists ask, "What next?" The collective work, which recently showed in Beijing, merges into a multicolored playground: installations, videos, photographs and traditional forms entwine so that the barriers and the borders among them melt away. The spectator finds himself at a fun fair or an amusement park, where art becomes a relief from its own political questions, an aesthetic pleasure as much as an intriguing set of ideas. Libro.

First Edition. Feng Zhengjie, whose work appears on the cover of 2005Â's China: The New Contemporary Painting, represents international trends toward borrowing and riffing on bygone styles--and the return to painterly technique--as much as he does his countryÂ's blooming contemporary art scene. His sources include posters of Shanghai in the 1930s and contemporary wedding photography, and the bright, streamlined style with which he addresses their conventions has the look of polished fashion imagery, an airbrushed 1980s feeling thatÂ's gotten increasingly eerie in recent years as his subjectsÂ' irises and pupils have shrunk to little dots on largely white eyes, giving them a glassy, doll-like look. Eleonora Battiston writes, "Their eyes change and follow the artistÂ's transformations.year by year, with different thoughts, looking towards and within his countryÂ's history and culture"; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 221 pages; Physical desc. : 221, [1] p. : chiefly col. Aggiungi al carrelloBrossura. Condizione: fine. A cura di Battiston E.Testo Italiano, Inglese e Cinese.Bologna, 2006; br., pp. 112, ill., cm 24x28.(Forward). A man falls to earth headfirst, cutting into the ground and resting there, feet up, like an unexploded bomb. A young woman humors a playful pet, an artist's head, as it bites the hem of her skirt. Li Wei, a young Beijing performance artist, has begun to pop up in the American media, and with images like these, it's no wonder. He received his earliest significant public exposure following an impromptu event at the 2000 Shanghai Biennial, in which he put his head through a hole in a mirror and attended (and was ejected from) a crowded reception. Recent pieces, including the public Green Gay Flag and the private It Would Not Die Away Like Such, have been both politically and sexually daring. This first monograph catalogues the artist's perceptive and often funny insights into China today and tomorrow. Libro.
