hardcover. Condizione: Good. This is not the reprint but the original first ed., published by Robert Clarke & Co., Cincinnati, 1891 with pref. by Eugene F. Bliss. Frontis. drawing of Mrs. Appleton in profile, with holograph of her signature. 267 p., clean and unmarked except for gift inscription on front end page and calligraphic signature of former owner on back end page; binding firm; dark brown boards and gilt lettering are unfaded despite absence of d.j., but there is a bump at upper edge of front board and very slight rubbing at crown of spine. Lectures comprise: Alexander Pope; The Novel of the Eighteenth Century; The Kemble Family; The Trollope Family; Two French Female Novelists (Mademoiselle de Scudery and Madame de Lafayette); Madame de Maintenon; Louis XV and His Family; The Puritan Minister; Ohio; Cincinnati. There is also a brief biography, or "memoir," of the popular lecturer. She is also remembered for her efforts to develop an endowment to create the Cincinnati Art Musuem.

Cincinnati.Elizabeth Haven Appleton (1815-1890) was an artist and educator, active in Cincinnati (Hamilton) from about 1849 to 1875. She was born October 16, 1815, in Liverpool, England adn taught at Lyman Harding's Femail Seminary, Cincinnati from 1849 to 1855. She then established a school of her own, Miss Appleton's School for Girls, which she ran until 1875. From 1876 to 1886, she was the librarian of the Ohio Historical and Philosophical Society, and later she lectured professionally on artistic and literary subjects. She died in Cincinnati on November 15, 1890.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. Robert Clarke and Co., 1880. I think this is the first edition of the English translation. Hardcover (no dust jacket), 112 numbered pages + ads at back for other art-related materials. This copy has four plates of charcoal drawings that appear to have been tipped in, as they are on a heavier stock of paper than that of the main text. This copy in good condition, but the frontispiece, though present, is detached. I'm sure a steady hand can glue it back in. Text is basically clean, but former owner did make a few marks here and there--not too may marks. One dog-eared page. Covers somewhat rubbed. Binding holding up well. Just an average used copy with a few relatively minor defects. The plates are nice. Willing to negotiate price--just send me a message if you're interested.
