Long Inscription by Margaret Lothrop at The Wayside, in Concord, Massachusetts which reads "For [John] Lawrence Hannigan [of Harvard University], This book is being inscribed in the room which was the Study of Mr. Amos Bronson Alcott [1799-1…888, American Transcendentalist philosopher, educator and reformer, Father of Louisa May Alcott] where this house, called by him "Hillside", was his home. Here often came his good friend, Mr. Emerson, to spend long and happy evenings. On one occasion he brought a picture of Mr. Thomas Carlyle [1795-1881, a Scottish Essayist, historian and philosopher] whom they both had known (page 922). The picture which had just arrived; Mr. Alcott thought a good likeness. Margaret . Lothrop. The Wayside, Concord, Massachusetts. September Third, 1954". Margaret Lothrop was born to Daniel and Harriett Lothrop on July 27, 1884 at the Wayside in Concord. Her mother wrote many books under the pen name of Margaret Sydney, including the Children's series the Five Little Peppers, and her father was a publisher, owning the D. Lothrop Publishing Company. They had purchased the Wayside because of its history, being the previous home of the authors Louisa May Alcott and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Following the death of her mother in 1924, Margaret formed a committee in Concord to plan to open the Wayside for tourists in 1928. She also published several books on the history of the Wayside. She worked to have The Wayside declared a National Historic Landmark in 1963, and then sold the house to the National Park Service to become part of the Minute Man National Historical Park on June 18, 1965. Margaret worked closely with the staff, including contributing the bulk of her research to the park, giving oral histories, and speaking to groups. xxvii, [1], 930pp, bound in blue cloth, with the binding and hinges tight, occasional pencil underlining, light age toning to the pages. The unclipped, double-sided dust jacket shows age toning and edge wear, now housed in a protective mylar cover. ALSO includes three unused postcards, laid in, of the Study of Ralph Waldo Emerson, a portrait of Thoreau, and The Thoreau Room in Concord.
