First edition, originally issued as a yellowback (see Topp II, 242). Octavo, pp. [i-ii] [i] ii [1] 2-331 [332: blank]. Rebound in early black half-cloth over marbled boards…. Illustrated with numerous engravings from designs by W. M'Connell, Kenny Meadows, H. G. Hine, and T. Macquoid. First few pages have some pencil underlining and marginalia, the results of a non-native speaker's efforts to identify difficult words, with a few translations in what may be Swedish. Edges rubbed and worn, otherwise a nice enough copy of a scarce book in any binding. Wolff 845 records his copy of the title novella's first periodical appearance in The Welcome Guest; he did not own a copy of the book. #316. $75. The title work is a short novel mixing crime, wit and romance. Most of the remainder of the book presents narrative verse of a generally light or satiric nature. "A radical in politics and a bohemian in life style" (Sutherland, p. 88), Brough produced journalism and fiction before dying at the age of 32, leaving his wife and children broke. Illustrated with numerous engravings from designs by W. M'Connell, Kenny Meadows, H. G. Hine, and T. Macquoid (illustratore).
