The principal essay by Donelson F. Hoopes traces the formation of the Ten American Painters group in December 1897, when Childe Hassam, J. Alden Weir, and John H. Twachtman led a secession from the Society of American Artists to mount independent exhibitions of their work. Hoopes situates the group within the reception of French impressionism in late-nineteenth-century America and follows the association through its dissolution in 1918, with William Merritt Chase joining upon Twachtman's death in 1902. Biographies by Melinda M. Mayer cover the eleven painters who participated over the group's twenty-one-year span: Frank Weston Benson, William Merritt Chase, Joseph Rodefer De Camp, Thomas Wilmer Dewing, Frederick Childe Hassam, Willard Leroy Metcalf, Robert Reid, Edward Emerson Simmons, Edmund Charles Tarbell, John Henry Twachtman, and Julian Alden Weir. Also includes a chronology drawn from the National Collection of Fine Arts records and a complete exhibition checklist.
