Hard Cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Near Fine. First Thus. First thus. An excellent copy. 1988 Hard Cover. viii, 313 pp. Arguing that the 1964 edition of Eugene O'Neill's unfinished play More Stately Mansions, prepared after the playwright's death, was missing a substantial amount of material that O'Neill intended for inclusion,…Martha Bower here presents an entirely new edition of the play with this material--dialogue, character description, an entire scene, the epilogue, and large parts of other scenes--restored. Published to coincide with the centennial of O'Neill's birth, it will stand as an important contribution to O'Neill scholarship.

Aggiungi al carrello48 pages plus covers. Staple-bound periodical; H 26.25cm x L 18.5cm. Off-white paper covers; strong soiling to color pictorial front cover with lighter soiling to blank rear cover, covers' edges overlap the text block with resulting chipping particularly at bottom corners and edges as well as mild curling and short tears, some l…oss at spine ends with 4.5cm tear at heel. Binding remains firm as staples are secure. Soiling to front cover's blank verso and opposing title page and at margins of rear cover recto; interior pages remain fairly clean. Minor loss at bottom corners of pages 1-4; top corner of pages 9-10 creased from past fold-down. Described on the title page as "a magazine of freshman literary endeavor" and published semiannually. Editor-in-chief James Douvarjo is cited as a staff representative; associate editors Marion H. Bastow, Elizabeth H. Hopkins, Eugene O'Neill, Paul Putziger, and Jerome S. Schwartz are cited as "Student Board." Biographer Louis Sheaffer, author of O'NEILL; SON AND PLAYWRIGHT (Boston: Little, Brown, 1968), does not mention any Syracuse University connection to playwright Eugene O'Neill (1888-1953) but, coincidently, O'Neill's namesake progeny, Eugene O'Neill, Jr. (1910-1950) would have been the right age for being a member of the literary magazine's "Student Board." However, O'Neill, Jr. graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in 1932 and a Ph.D. in 1936 so, lacking a Syracuse yearbook or class annual for further research, it is probably best to assume that there is no relation. Such speculation is all the more pointless for O'Neill is not listed among the contributors of the magazine's thirty-seven literary pieces, i.e. one play and multiple short stories and poems. Only a good copy but certainly quite uncommon as such collegiate publications tend to be quite ephemeral.

W/ no uniquely American tradition to guide him, O'Neill introduced various dramatic techniques, which subsequently became staples of the U.S. theater. By 1914 he had written 12 one-act and 2 long plays. Of this early work, only "Thirst and Other One-act plays" (1914) was originally published. From this point on, O'Neill's work falls roughly into 3 phases to which the three volumes of this SUPERB complete edition approximately correspond: Volume I: the early plays, written from 1913 to 1921 ("The Long Voyage Home", "The Moon of the Caribbees", "Beyond the Horizon", "Anna Christie"); Volume II: a variety of full-length plays for Broadway ("Desire Under the Elms"; "Great God Brown"; "Ah, Wilderness!"); & Volume III: the last, great plays, written between 1938 & his death ( "The Iceman Cometh", "Long Day's Journey Into Night", "A Moon for the Misbegotten"). Eugene O'Neill is a 4-time Pulitzer Prize winner, & he was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1936. * THE LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an award-winning, nonprofit program dedicated to publishing authoritative texts of America's best & most significant writing in handsome, enduring volumes. Hailed as "the most important book-publishing project in the nation's history" (Newsweek), this acclaimed series is restoring America's literary heritage in "the finest, longest-lasting edition ever made" (New Republic).
