Includes "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon," "China Boy," "Stompin' At the Savoy," "Sing Sing Sing," etc. Those who danced to this music between 1937 and 1960, if they're still with us at all, are now 80 or older. One of these years someone will make a movie and a follow-up TV show about "the home front" in the early forties, and the jitterbug will again be all the rage . . . for a while. By then, most of this vinyl will be gone to the landfills. Perhaps wiser to grab it now. Reduced from $15.

Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm heavy vinyl record album, Decca High Fidelity Long Play (mono) DL 8567, very-good-plus vinyl wearing the old silver-on-black labels in a very-good-plus cardboard jacket which is stamped with the circled letter "T" to top of verso. This 1957 entry is not exactly rock 'n roll (though jacket back cover does advertise Bill Haley's "Rock 'n Roll Stage Show" and the soundtrack to "Rock Pretty Baby," with Sal Mineo and John Saxon.) Rather, the slow-dancing vocal duo (Al Alberts and Dave Mahoney, backed by Rosario "Sod" Voccaro on trumpet and Lou Silvestri on drums) who had big hits earlier in the fifties with "Tell Me Why" (Gold & Alberts, not Lennon & McCartney) and "Heart and Soul," here offer "Have You Ever Been Lonely (Have You Ever Been Blue)", "Peg O' My Heart," "Heartaches," "There I've Said It Again" eight others of the same ilk. No, the reason this album makes our "Weird Vinyl" collection is the color jacket cover photo of (supposed) teen-agers (supposedly) doing "The Shuffle." Not that we have anything against small people, mind you. But for this cover shoot, did the folks at Decca actually recruit a group of dwarves?

Brother Lee Roy was with Ray Anthony's band through 1946. Jacket notes identify this as "contemporary dance music." The uncredited band offers "Perdido," "Street Walkin'," "Leapin' Lee Roy," "Flying Home," "Wire Wheels," three others. Reduced from $22.

First known appearance in a book by Thomas Clayton Wolfe (following the separate publication of his "Crisis in Industry") in the form of his play "The Return of Buck Gavin / The Tragedy of a Mountain Outlaw." (Wolfe played the lead in the 1919 first stage production -- the glossy photo at the play's start here depicts a bearded Wolfe as the title character.) Features four other plays, seven other glossy photos and two woodcuts by J.J. Lankes and another by Mary De B. Graves. 173 pp. Reduced from $30.

Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm stereo vinyl rock 'n roll record, Mercury SR-60940, vinyl "very good" to "very good-plus" (many light scratches which cannot be felt) in a near-mint glossy color cardboard jacket. The Hondells, Wikipedia informs us, were a band manufactured by producer Gary Usher, originally consisting of session musicians, to cover the Beach Boys' "Little Honda" (Brian Wilson-Mike Love.) The song, we're told, "was inspired by" the popularity of Honda motor bikes in Southern California during the early 1960s, abetted by a 1962 Honda advertising campaign stressing that well-dressed folk could ride the low-maintenance bikes, that motorcycles were no longer just for tough guys who didn't mind being constantly soaked in motor oil. (We have been unable to verify rumors, widespread at the time, that Soichiro Honda & Co. SUBSIDIZED the song or the Hondells.) The Beach Boys released "Little Honda" on their 1964 album "All Summer Long"; Gary Usher reportedly proceeded to hand former Castells' vocalist Chuck Girard a copy and instructed him to "learn 'Little Honda.'" Usher then recruited a group of studio musicians -- including Glen Campbell -- to record an album of Honda-related songs for Mercury. Aside from "Little Honda", most of the songs (including "The Wild One" and "Hot Rod High") were written by Usher and KFWB Hollywood disc jockey and lyricist Roger Christian (who also contributes the jacket notes, here), though Mike Curb -- who also wrote the song for Honda's "You meet the nicest people on a Honda" TV advertising campaign -- contributed "Rip's Bike." Album's cover shows a four-member group (no Glen Campbell, sorry), obviously shot at a Honda dealership, and the jacket notes contain an elaborate back story, penned by Christian, identifying Ritchie Burns (or possibly "Richie" Burns) as founder and leader of the band, which "worked fraternity and sorority parties at UCLA and USC and are one of the top groups in Southern California." (Richard B. Burns -- 1937 to 2010 -- was real enough. Other sources report he asked drummer Wayne Edwards and two other friends to pose with him as "band members" for the cover photos, here.) As the single climbed the charts (eventually reaching No. 9), Usher assembled a band to tour in support (evidently including Burns and Edwards.) Capitol Records responded by releasing the Beach Boys' version of "Go Little Honda" as a single (B side of "Wendy"), though it only reached No. 65. ("Wendy" reached No. 44.) The Hondells scored another modest hit in 1966 with a cover of John Sebastian's "Younger Girl" (though the essentially simultaneous Critters' cover fared much better) before disbanding. After appearing in "Beach Blanket Bingo," R. Burns reportedly changed careers and became a banker. Producer Gary Usher continued to mine the genre with numerous "bands" made up of session musicians doing one-offs, from the stable known as The Wrecking Crew, which had a rotating lineup including alternating drummers Hal Blaine and Earl Palmer, issuing singles as The Sunsets, The Four Speeds, Gary Usher and The Usherettes, The Honeys, The Competitors, The Go-Gos, The Devons, The Ghouls, The Super Stocks, The Indigos, The Revells, The Kickstands and The Knights. (Most of these have been re-issued on CD and are meticulously cataloged at Beach Boys fan sites.) The Hondells can be seen in three different feature-length films, all 1965: AIP's aforementioned "Beach Blanket Bingo" (shown performing "Cycle Set" and providing backup on "Fly Boy"); AIP's "Ski Party" (shown performing "The Gasser" and heard performing the title track); and Paramount's "Beach Ball" (shown performing "My Buddy Seat"). The band is also credited with performing the title track for Columbia's 1965 film "Winter A-Go-Go." We also list a mono copy, in even better condition. This disc now reduced from $19.

Features "I'm Wishing," "Heigh Ho," "Whistle While You Work," and of course "Some Day My Prince Will Come." Snow White (1937-38) is Disney's first, breakthrough, feature-length animated masterpiece. The million-dollar gamble known throughout Hollywood before its release as "Disney's Folly," this was the film during the long development of which Disney realized a mere series of "gags" couldn't sustain an 84-minute feature, that instead of the wicked queen being merely a "fat and batty" comic character, she had to project some real menace. "Snow White" received a standing ovation at its Hollywood premiere from an audience which included John Barrymore, Judy Garland, Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, and Cecil B. DeMille, won rave reviews ("So perfect is the illusion," wrote Variety, "so tender the romance and fantasy, so emotional are certain portions when the acting of the characters strikes a depth comparable to the sincerity of human players, that the film approaches real greatness"), and in 1938 earned four times more money than any other film released that year. The Motion Picture Academy missed the boat entirely, failing to honor the film at all (not even "best song" for "Some Day My Price Will Come," an honor which instead went to Harry Owens' "Sweet Leilani" from the eminently forgettable Bing Crosby-Martha Raye vehicle "Waikiki Wedding") but tried to make good their mistake by having Shirley Temple hand Walt an "honorary" award the following year, for, you know, INVENTING THE FEATURE-LENGTH ANIMATED FILM. (There don't seem to have been any suspicions of carnal irregularities in the odd Seven Dwarf household in that more innocent era, though we hate to think what today's Disney organization would make of such an opportunity.) Walt Disney used much of the profit from Snow White to finance a new $4.5 million studio in Burbank -- which remains the location of Walt Disney Studios to this day. Within two years, the studio completed Pinocchio and Fantasia and had begun production on the animated Dumbo, Bambi, Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. Counting income from home video release, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" -- for an initial investment of $1.49 million dollars -- had by 2001 taken in $1.1 billion. Furthermore, "Snow White" was one of the biggest-grossing films of the year in Europe -- during its re-release in 1963. "Disney's Folly," indeed. This 1968 LP now reduced from $45.
