La storiografia ha posto l'accento sull'effetto omogeneizzante… della guerra totale, fino a parlare di una cultura di guerra di scala europea. Questo volume insegue la nozione di cultura di guerra nella scrittura popolare di una singola comunità contadina, quella del Trentino di inizio secolo sottoposto all'autorità asburgica, cercando le tracce di uno scontro - quello tra una cultura contadina e l'effetto disgregante della guerra totale - che si è giocato non nella trincea, ma principalmente sulle pagine di diari, memorie e memoriali. L'autore descrive i dispositivi retorici attraverso i quali gli aspetti potenzialmente destabilizzanti della guerra sono neutralizzati, domati, manipolati attraverso la parola scritta. Di fronte a un evento spesso considerato spartiacque della modernità, questo studio si occupa delle armi retoriche con cui la battaglia locale tra modernità e tradizione contadina venne combattuta e degli sforzi, forse disperati ma mai abbandonati dagli attori sociali, di affermare la continuità.
