Hardback. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. Hard Cover. Taschen 2020. LARGE edition Book condition: New. Dust Jacket. Full Colour illustrations. Dust Jacket condition: New. In 1947, Bill Gaines inherited EC Comics, a new venture founded by his legendary father M. C. Gaines, who was responsible for midwifing the bir…th of the comic book as we know it during his tenure at All-American Comics, bringing the likes of Wonder Woman and Green Lantern to the world. Over the next eight years, Bill Gaines and a "who's who" of the era including Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman, and Wally Wood would reinvent the very notion of the comic book with titles like Tales from the Crypt, Crime SuspenStories, Weird Science, and MAD. EC delighted in publishing gory, morbid horror and crime comics that had snap, ironic endingsbut they also pioneered the first true-to-life war comics, the first "real" science-fiction stories, and a series of tales about such then-taboo subjects as racism, bigotry, vigilantism, drug addiction, police corruption, and anti-Semitism. Too good to last, they were eventually caught up by various 1950s guardians of morality, who were convinced that EC's often over-the-top content was causing juvenile delinquency. A year or so after a full inquiry investigating horror and crime comics, the incredible EC Comics were no more. This comprehensive, fascinating story of this fabled company is written and expertly curated by EC authority Grant Geissman. Even the most die-hard EC Fan-Addicts will find something new within these pages, with the Gaines family archives providing more than 100 rarities that have never seen print. Many of the cover images are reproduced from Gaines File Copies, which are widely regarded as the best surviving copies of the EC Comics. Gathering more than 1,000 illustrations that include the rarest and most notorious covers, interior pages and panels, photos, vintage original artwork, and some of the most celebrated stories ever to be printed in four colors for a dime, this is the ultimate EC Comics compendium and a must-have for any comics enthusiast or pop culture historian. Grant Geissman is one of the world's leading experts on EC Comics and Mad magazine, and the author and designer of four books on the subject, three of them nominated for an Eisner Award. He is also an Emmy-nominated guitarist and composer who co-wrote the music for the hit television series Two and a Half Men and Mike & Molly. He has fourteen albums released under his own name, including the jazz trilogy Say That!, Cool Man Cool, and BOP! BANG! BOOM! Still sealed in plastic! 592 pages. Size: 11" x 16" (290mm x 395mm). (5.22). Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman, Wally Wood, John Severin, Roy Krenkel, Joe Orlando, Frank Kelly Freas, et al (illustratore).

With the success of the Harvey Kurtzman edited MAD, EC decided to launch an imitation of their own, published originally by William M. Gaines. This was i…n common with many other publishers of the day. They got off to a turbulent start with their sly lampooning of Clement C. Moore's famous poem, The Night Before Christmas. Elder's Just Divorced sign on the back of Santa's sleigh becoming the final straw. Despite this, Panic managed a respectable run of twelve issues (1954-5). The same lunatic artistry found at MAD is available here, with the likes of Will Elder, Wally Wood, Jack Davis & John Severin. The last four issues, published under the Comics Code, are muted but there is much enjoyment to be found under the editorship of Al Feldstein. He would take over MAD in 1956 & turn it into an American institution. Each book is smyth sewn and deluxe bound to last a lifetime of re-reading. This comes from the personal collection of legendary comic artist Dave Gibbons and features a certificate of authenticity! Size: 10" x 12" (250mm x 300mm). (10). Various (illustratore).

FROM THE LIBRARY OF COMIC LEGEND DAVE GIBBONS! Published originally by William M. Gaines. After the introduction of the Comic Code Authority, all publishers were required t…o have their Comics approved or risk them remaining undistributed throughout America. EC held out for a while with their existing titles but in early 1955 launched six brand new titles, Aces High, Extra, Impact, M.D, Psychoanalysis & Valor. They also converted Weird Science Fantasy into Incredible Science Fiction, with the extant Piracy & Panic. the concluding part of Cochran's Complete New Direction was formed by Impact, M.D and Valor (fifteen issues in total). Impact was EC's attempt to continue the shock or mystery style stories with high interest covers & stories by Jack Davis, Reed Crandall, Graham Ingels, Joe Orlando & George Evans. The first issue is famous for Krigstein's haunting & disturbing Master Race, wherein a holocaust survivor meets his former captor on a New York subway train. Publisher Gaines permitted the artist to extend the story to eight pages& it is regarded rightly as a defining classic. M.D was the second foray into the medical genre, with stylish covers by Craig & interior stories by EC's regular artists. Valor is another highlight of EC's New-Direction series. The covers were illustrated by Wally Wood & Al Williamson, with interiors by them, plus Graham Ingels, Krigstein, Reed Crandall & others. Despite their high concept & striking art, none of the New-Direction titles survived more than five issues under a restrictive Code & anti-Comics mood of 1950s America.
