Translation of a bit of the Latin on the back: "This region is part of Gallica Belgica, once inhabited by those from Amiens, Beauvais and Vermandois or, as Ptolemæus calls them, Romandui. The river Somme which some think to be Ptolemæus' Phrudis, refreshes the whole country, and renders it fertile for all kinds of grain, and the towns and cities too abound with all necessities, for it yields so much wheat that it is called by a common saying the barn or granary of Paris. It has no vineyards, which defect some think is to be attributed to the laziness of the inhabitants, rather than to the inappropriateness of either the soil or the climate." Some toning; staining on the back, the text remains perfectly legible. Very Good.

There is no king here for the benefit of these inhabitants. This place yields wine, corn, cattle and plenty of salt. That is pleasant, but it worked out differently for Stiria as compared to Westphalia; for as the last mentioned Westphalia produces wicked rather than foolish people, similarly the first mentioned Stiria produces gluttons and fools, rather than wicked or sly people." Translation of a bit of the Latin on the back: "Illyricum is a country on the coast of the Hadriatic sea opposite Italy. Some think that these countries were named as they are after Illyrius, the son of Polyphemus. Others [say] after Illyrius, the son of Cadmus. Strabo writes that the whole sea coast of Illyricum, with the adjacent islands, is provided with very good harbours, whereas in contrast to this the whole opposite coast of Italy has none at all. It is a hot country, as Italy is, and very fertile for many sorts of grain, famous for olives and vines, except [for] certain places which are altogether rough and untilled. The high country above it is altogether mountainous, cold and snowy, especially the part towards the North. The people of this country in old times were much given to robbery and thieving, but now they are somewhat more civil. They dwell mostly in houses of timber, thatched with straw, except for a few harbour cities in which their buildings are a bit more human." Translation of a bit of the Latin on the back: "This province was divided by Alphonsus the Stout, king of Arragon into two parts, Abruzzo the Lower and Abruzzo the Higher. Abruzzo the Higher which we have depicted separately by itself on this map is separated from the Lower by the river Pescara which old writers called Aternus. Scipio Mazella in his very accurate description of the kingdom of Naples says that this country is by location and nature of the place very strong, and inhabited by a stout and sturdy nation, and that their soil is very fertile for wines and cattle." Minimal staining at the front margin, a little on the back, the top margin has an inch tear, cured with tape on the back. Very Good.

Translation of a bit of the Latin on the back:"The Nile, the river which runs through the middle of it and waters all the country empties itself into the Midland sea, according to what Guilielmus Tyrius teaches us, by only four mouths, [this] in contrast to what all other ancient writers say. This [Tyrius] is a man worthy to be believed in this matter, because he was both an eye witness and a most diligent searcher of the truth. I have a map, I think drawn with a pen in Egypt, which shows this many [river mouths, viz. four], and it does not refer to any others that are worth speaking of. Haithon writes that in this whole country there is no strong city fortified with a ditch, wall or rampart except for Alexandria and Cairo. They still continue to speak the Britan language, and cannot speak one word of English, which consists of a mixture of Saxon and other languages. They now divide Wales into three provinces, Venedoth, Povisia and Dehenbarth. Venedoth also comprises Mona island. The inhabitants in food and fashion follow the English. And because they are a people not fond to work, and bragging much about their noble background, they rather devote themselves to the service of the king and nobility than to apply themselves to manual occupations. This is the reason why you shall find few noblemen throughout England whose greater part of servants (in which the English surpass any other nation whatsoever) are not born as Welshmen."
