Paperback. Condizione: New. A collection to whet the appetite of anyone wishing to learn more about a region rich in history, folklore and (her)stories. Telling it like a woman does not mean literature for women only: it provides an insight into half of humanity, a window onto the lives of citizens who work, love and develop the…ir inner lives. This collection brings together the voices of a wide selection of prize-winning and established authors:Balkan Bombshells brings together established Serbian and Montenegrin writers like Svetlana Slapsak, Jelena Lengold (winner of the EU Prize for Literature 2013), Dana Todorovic and Olja Knezevic (author of Catherine the Great and the Small, Istros 2020), together with a select group of up-coming writers: Marijana Canak (1982, Serbia): "Awakened" (Probudena) follows the early years of a girl from a very simple background, who discovers she has extrasensory powers. A gruesome fascination with biology allows her to attend high school, where she ends up sewing a voodoo doll to take revenge on a molesting teacher. Marijana Dolic (1990, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia): "Notes from the attic" (Zapisi iz potkrovlja), originally diary entries, are intense mediatations on faith, love and hope - poignant testimony to a struggle to cope in difficult times. Ana Milos (1992, Serbia): "Peace" (Mir) portrays a woman struggling with disparate feelings after her only child dies. She has long since broken up with the child's father. She enjoys finally having time for herself, but she has to confront accusations of people around her that she is heartless. Once a mother, always a mother? Katarina Mitrovic (1991, Serbia):"Small death" (Mala smrt). We are introduced to a fearful young woman who is far from happy with life, and we follow her on a summer holiday by the Adriatic, where a halfhearted romantic adventure takes a scary turn. Andrea Popov Miletic (1985, Serbia): : excerpt from the novel Young pioneers, we are seaweed (Pioniri maleni, mi smo morska trava; 2019). This stand-alone excerpt is a poetic flashback to her childhood in the province of Vojvodina in the Yugoslav era, to holidays by the Mediterranean, and to feelings of belonging and home. Lena Ruth Stefanovic (1970, Sebria/ Montenegro): "Zhenya" is a fragment from her 2016 novel Daughter of the Childless Man (Scer onoga bez dece), is an entertaining meta-story about an ordinary woman in the late Soviet Union, whom the author decides to grant a new lease of life, so Zhenya studies languages, becomes a mondain writer and moves with her new husband to Montenegro, where the author loses track of her.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This volume brings together six unique female voices: Magdalena Blazevic, Tatjana Gromaca, Vesna Peric, Natali Spasova, Sonja Zivaljevic and Ana Svetel from six countries that were part of Yugoslavia until the early 1990s. Elements of a common history shine through in this smorgasbord of cl…assic short stories, travel writing, diarylike accounts and stand-alone chapters from a hard-hitting novel. Despite the intervening wars and crises, the six republics of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia are 'reunited' - albeit briefly - in this collection. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: New. "In From Nowhere to Nowhere Bekim Sejranovic gives us the elegiac beauties echoing over the vanishing times and places, inviting us to reflect and at the same time to relish funky flashes of memory." --Josip Novakovich, author of April Fool's Day and Man Booker International Prize finalist Bekim Sejra…novic's From Nowhere to Nowhere is a subtle yet unforgettable meditation on the factors that shape identity. The novel's unnamed narrator, raised by his grandparents and scattered to the wind from his hometown of Brcko, Bosnia and Herzegovina, during the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, travels to Croatia and Norway, trying to reclaim a sense of self he isn't sure he ever possessed in the first place. From his days playing soccer with friends on Unity Street outside his home to Muslim funerals, his job as an interpreter for Balkan refugees, and his fractious relationships with women, a nomadic aesthetic emerges brilliantly rendering what it means to live a life from which you have always been removed.

Paperback. Condizione: New. When Miroslav Krleza traveled through Russia for six months between the end of 1924 and the beginning of 1925, the celebrated Croatian writer was there to figure out what it all meant. The sprawling country was still coming to terms with the events of the 1917 revolution and reeling from Lenin's death… in January 1924. During this period of profound political and social transition, Krleza opened his senses to train stations, cities, and villages and collected wildly different Russian perspectives on their collective moment in history.Krleza's impressionistic reportage of mass demonstrations and jubilant Orthodox Easter celebrations is informed by his preoccupation with the political, social, and psychological complexities of his environment. The result is a masterfully crafted modernist travelogue that resonates today as much as it did when first published in 1926.
